Table 6-1. Final Transplanting Inspection Checklist:

The final step in the planting process is inspection (Watson & Himelick, 1997). There are many things that need to be checked:

bulletIs the planting depth correct?
bulletIs the trunk straight?
bulletHas a raised ring of soil been formed to hold irrigation water over the root ball.
bulletDoes the pruning job look good from all directions?
bulletHas the plant been mulched without covering the base of the trunk?
bulletWas the plant watered thoroughly?
bulletHas the extra soil, root ball wrappings, pruned branches and other debris been removed from the site?
bulletIf the plant needed staking, do the ties allow for growth and movement of the trunk?
bulletDoes the new owner or maintenance crew understand how important proper care will be for the survival and good health of the new plant?

It might seem like the job is done once the new plant is in the ground and everything is cleaned up, but it is not. It may have taken weeks, or longer, to choose the right tree and plant it properly, but it may take years for the new plant to establish, especially larger trees. Throughout this period an ongoing commitment to maintenance will be required.
