Coil and Magnets. With this element, you can model the induction of currents and magnetic fields in a coil of wire by one or more moving magnets. You can only use this element  in combination with the Compass. Placing the Coil & Magnets element will disable the tools for all other elements. Similarly, placing any tool except the Compass will disable the Coil & Magnets tool button.

If you place this tool into an empty simulation window, the Compass will automatically be placed, and wires drawn from the Coil to the Compass. If the simulation window already contains the Compass, the Coil will be automatically wired to the Compass.

To see how much  the current in the wire deflects the compass needle, double-click on the Compass in Stop mode.

In either Run mode or Stop mode, you can change (with the Select tool depressed):

  • The number of turns in the Coil;

  • The speed or frequency of the magnets, in terms of cycles per second (between 0.5 and 2.0);

  • The number of magnets (between 1 and 5); and

  • The north/south orientation of the magnets (the flip magnets option).

In addition to the panels, you can use the Properties Box of the Coil & Magnets element to change these variables.
