Prehistory
is being liberally defined here to cover the period of time prior to and
just after European contact with the area. The
primary focus, therefore, is upon archaeological investigations of the
region into the lives, history, and folkways of the various Native American
groups who hunted and later settled in the Duck River watershed. While
the famed Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto may well have traversed a
portion of the lower Duck River in the 16th century, it is a rather isolated
event when compared to the larger incursions of Europeans in the late
18th century. Information
about Native Americans up to the Woodland and Mississippian eras composes
the bulk of information presented here.
