Instructions for Faculty:
Connecting to Your Course Folders (Class Files, Class Drops) or
Retrieving OLD PC Lab Files (available during Spring 2009 only)
in the PC Labs from your Office Computer (Windows XP)

Contents

Introduction

To access PC Lab folders (such as the Class Files, Class Drops folders) you will need to make a connection from your office computer.  Two methods for doing this under Windows XP are described below.  The main difference between these two methods is that when you map a network drive (Method 1) your computer will be connected at startup.  If you use the Run command described in Method 2, your connection will be made only when you click on the shortcut you created on your desktop.

Method 1:  Map a Network Drive

Make sure the username on your office machine is the same as your PC Lab Account username.

  • Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop.
  • Select Map Network Drive.
  • If My Computer is not on the desktop in XP, from the Start menu, select My Computer.  Then from menu, select Tools > Map Network Drive.
  • Choose an unused drive letter.  You may want to use the same letters as in the lab (G: for class data and assignment folders and F: for class drops, but this is not necessary).
  • Check Reconnect at Logon, if desired.
  • Type the location of the drive you wish to map.
  • NEW:  To connect to your OLD U: drive:  \\xfiles.pclab.tntech.edu\oldusers\ username
This will ONLY allow you to copy files you left on the old pclab server, so that you can move them to your office machine, if you neglected to do so in December 2008!!

  • For folders for handouts:  \\athena.pclab.tntech.edu\classfiles
  • For folders for students to submit work: \\athena.pclab.tntech.edu\classdrops
  • Check Reconnect at logon to have this drive mapped each time you log on.
  • Click on Connect using a different user name.

  • Enter your username as:
    pclab\username
  • Enter your password
  • Click OK.
  • Browse to the folder with your department name (Math, English, etc.).
  • Open it and browse to find the folder with your specific course and section number.
  • Select the folder and right-click.
  • Select Create a shortcut.
  • A message should appear suggesting that the shortcut be placed on your desktop.
  • Click Yes.
You will now be able to copy files from your machine to your folder on the server just as you would be able to copy files between folders on your computer.

Method 2:  Using the Run Command

Make sure your username on your office machine is the same as your PC Lab Account username.

From the Start menu, select Run.

Type the drive you wish to connect to:

  • NEW:  To connect to your OLD U: drive:  \\xfiles.pclab.tntech.edu\oldusers\ username
This will ONLY allow you to copy files you left on the old pclab server, so that you can move them to your office machine, if you neglected to do so in December 2008!!

  • For folders for handouts:  \\athena.pclab.tntech.edu\classfiles

  • For folders for students to submit work:  \\athena.pclab.tntech.edu\classdrops

  • Click OK.

  • If prompted for a password give the password to your PC Lab Account.  Note that this will be saved in your password list so you will not have to supply it again.

You will now be able to copy files from your machine to your folders on the server just as you would be able to copy files between folders on your computer.
