Susan Elkins, Director
The Division of Extended Education is a University-wide service division which promotes educational, social, economic, and cultural development and welfare in Tennessee, particularly in the Upper Cumberland region and surrounding counties. This mission is carried out through the delivery of credit and non-credit offerings, at both on-campus and at off-campus locations in the service area. Deans, departmental chairpersons, and University faculty members participate in the off-campus advisory and instructional program to insure that courses offered are of the same quality as those taught on the main campus. Provisions are made to utilize highly qualified personnel from business, industry and various educational agencies to provide direction and instruction for conferences, seminars, lectures, and workshops.
The objectives of Extended Education are to offer courses at off-campus sites and centers in thirty-four Tennessee counties; offer campus evening courses to accommodate student schedules; provide workshops, conferences, seminars and special courses to meet a wide variety of needs of various groups and individuals throughout the area; deliver courses, workshops, seminars and other special offerings via telecourse, interactive television, or other appropriate distance learning delivery methods; and to promote service and outreach efforts to those of the TTU community in Cookeville, the Upper Cumberland region, and throughout the entire service area of the University.
Credit courses are scheduled and arranged at approved off-campus sites which are concentrated at locations recommended by the University and approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Higher education centers are operated collaboratively with Roane State Community College in Crossville and Scott County and with Motlow State Community College in McMinnville. Under the auspices of these agreements, students are provided opportunities to work toward the Associate, Baccalaureate, Master's and Specialist degrees. Courses are offered at the remaining sites in the service area in response to a well-documented need.
Non-credit courses are offered to meet the needs of individuals, groups and organizations both on-campus and off-campus. Participants are not required to satisfy specific educational requirements for admission to most courses. Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are awarded for many non-credit courses, while others are offered strictly on a non-credit basis. Fees for non-credit courses vary and are based upon the cost of offering the course.
The staff of Extended Education assists in scheduling course offerings, workshops, conferences, seminars, special courses, and in meeting service needs. Assistance with registration for Extended Education courses is provided by the campus Extended Education staff and coordinators at each off-campus location.
