Deletion of Catalog Statement for Mechanical Engineering Majors
Regarding FE Exam - Information Item Only
In a memorandum dated September 9, 2006, the following was presented by Dr. Hoy as an information item only.
After in-depth consideration and discussion during the course of the Fall, 2005 semester, the M.E. Department Faculty voted to rescind the Departmental policy that all ME undergraduate majors must take the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) as a requirement for completion of the BSME degree.
Consequently, it is requested that the last sentence in the Mechanical Engineering Department section under the College of Engineering description in the Undergraduate Catalog be deleted, effective immediately:
“Before graduation, Mechanical Engineering students are required to take the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination administered by the Tennessee State Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners. “

Society Lec. 3, Cr. 3
An interdisciplinary approach to food production and distribution for the

Requirement of the General Education Core.)
Effective: Spring 2007
Motion. Dr. Faw moved to approve the addition.
Dean Armistead made a friendly amendment to the motion that approval be contingent upon approval of the TTU General Education Committee.
The friendly amendment was accepted.
The question was raised and discussion followed as to whether this course was too specialized and lacked the breadth of a general education course.
Dean Armistead stated that in order for this course to be presented at the yearly TBR General Education meeting in October, it is necessary to have this course approved by the University Curriculum Committee and then on to a called TTU General Education Committee meeting. This is not the usual order of business, but necessary for this course to be considered at the October TBR General Education Meeting.
Dean Armistead requested that this committee consider the course on its own merit. The TTU General Education Committee will consider it on the breadth and merit of the general education guidelines.
A vote was taken and the motion carried.
