Report on Status of General Education Courses

Dean Armistead reported that the Board of Regents has disallowed five of our requested courses because, in the spirit of the general education philosophy, they lack breath of focus.  Appeals have been submitted for the five courses, which are:  History of Science; Environmental History; History of Country Music; foreign languages (under humanities); and professional communications course.  Dean Armistead stated he had a strong feeling that the appeals would be accepted, but as yet, we have not received a response from the Board.  Dean Armistead stated that in the event that no word is received by the time student's are working on their spring schedules, we will proceed with our original proposal of general education courses.

Advising During the Transition

Prof. Tolbert stated that with all the uncertainties (i.e. 120-hour program effective dates, graduation dates and general education core courses) students are being advised  to the best of our ability regarding time frames for definite answers to graduating under the 120-programs.

A lot of questions have arisen between TBR allowing our departments  to graduate students under the 120-hour curricula before 2004 and our not yet Board approved list of general education core courses, which have to be attached to the new programs.

To help determine that students who have completed their general education courses and want to graduate
under the 120-curricula can have appropriate substitutions, a form has been devised.

Prof. Tolbert stated a form has been devised to help deal with the substitution of general education courses for those students wishing to graduate under the 120-curricula who have already finished their general education courses.  The form lists the Learning Outcomes.  If a course meets the number of Outcomes as designated in TBR guidelines it can be considered a substitution.  The form requires the signatures of the faculty and chairperson.  The form will be in html format.  The approved form will be sent to the Graduation Office, then posted on a newly created website called "New Curriculum" so that an advisor can check to see if a course has already been used as a substitution.

The meeting adjourned at 4:45 p.m.
