Approval of Agenda as Revised  
Dr. Mills requested the removal of item 8 from the Department of Music and Art.

Motion.  Dr. Stein moved to approve the agenda as revised.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Jordan and carried.

Approval of minutes  
Motion.  Ms. Mannle moved to approve the November 8, 2007 minutes as submitted.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Loutzenheiser and carried.

Approval of  TnCIS Program Courses   

In a memorandum dated January 31, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Course Additions:
TCIS 2990  TnCIS Program  Cr. 1-12
Study Abroad with the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies.  May be repeated once.

Motion.  Dr. Stephens moved to approve the course additions with the following amendments, effective Summer 2008:

Approval of Curriculum Changes from the Department of Physics  

In a memorandum dated January 18, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Curriculum Changes:
1.    Replace ENGR 1120 and ENGR 2121 in the Physics Curriculum by CSC 2100, Introduction to Problem Solving and Computer Programming.

2.    Add CSC 3020, Numerical Methods, as a requirement for physics majors, and delete 3 hours of electives.

Motion.  Dr. Robinson moved to approve the changes effective with the next catalog.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Laurila and carried.

Dr. Mills relinquished the chair to Dr. Roberts.

Approval of Course Change from the Department of Mathematics 

In a memorandum dated January 23, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Motion.  Dr. Mills moved to approve the change effective Fall 2008.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Boles and carried.

Dr. Roberts returned the chair back to Dr. Mills.

A minor in Web Design would be beneficial for students in several disciplines (such as Business, Education, and English) who would like a basic background in Web Design.

The minor in Web Design would consist of the following courses:

Clerical revisions to the BS in Communication with a speech communication concentration  
Curriculum Changes in the four-year curriculum included in the 2006-07 catalog:  
A.    In the junior year, add JOUR 3400 in place of ENGL 4551.  Move ENGL 4551 from the Junior year to the Senior year in place of "Choose from Selected courses."

B.    In the Junior year change from "Choose from selected courses" to "Electives."

C.    In the freshman and sophomore years, change social/behavioral science Elective to "Social Science."

D.    In the sophomore year, delete "Choose 1 of the following:  ENGL 2130, 2230, or 2330."
Leave "ENGL 2330"

E.    Add SPCH 3000 to the sophomore year in place of "Choose from selected courses."

An examination of computer, internet, and digital interaction as a form of human communication achieved through computer technology.  Analysis of how the use of electronic devices such as email, instant messaging, cell phones, internet, blogs, and video games affects interpersonal and group dynamics.

Ending date for PC 2700-2703 
At the February 16, 2006 meeting of the University Curriculum Committee, the Committee approved the deletion of PC 2700-2703 from the Professional Communication curriculum.  However, the proposal to delete these courses did not include and ending/effective date.  The courses are therefore still being included in the catalog.

Approval of Course Addition from the Academic Development Program 

In a memorandum dated February 4, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Course Addition: 
ADPM0810  Review of Basic Mathematical/Algebraic Concepts/Terminology
                                                                        Lec./Lab. 3  Cr. 3 (non-graduation credit)
Requirement for placement in the course:  Prerequisite:  Approval of student's major chairperson and chairperson of ADP.

Course Content:  Fundamental operations and concepts involving basic arithmetic; fractions; area, perimeter and volume; operations with signed numbers; simple linear equations/inequalities; mathematics vocabulary; English for math word problems.

Motion.  Ms. Whitaker moved to approve the addition, as amended above, effective Summer 2008.  The motion was seconded by Ms. Mannle and carried.

Dr. Armistead alerted the committee that we are currently waiting TBR approval of this proposal.  This motion will be contingent upon TBR's approval.

NOTE:  On February 15, Dr. Armistead received word from TBR that we will not be able to offer this course.

Approval of Course Addition, Change and Curriculum Changes from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering  

In a memorandum dated January 23, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Course Addition:
CEE 3430  Environmental Engineering Lab.   Lab. 2, Cr. 1
Prerequisite or corequisite:  CEE 3413.  Laboratory experiments to illustrate the application of engineering fundamentals to environmental systems.

Course Change: 
From:
CEE 3410 Water Supply and Pollution Control   Lec. 3, Lab. 2, Cr. 4
Prerequisites:  CHEM 1120, MATH 2110.  Fundamental principles of water and wastewater treatment.

To:
CEE 3413 Environmental Engineering   Lec. 3, Cr. 3
Prerequisites:  CHEM 1120, MATH 2110.  Fundamentals of environmental engineering with applications in water quality, water and wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution, and hazardous waste management.

Curriculum Changes:  
CEE 3410 will be deleted Spring 2009 and replaced by CEE 3413 in Junior year.
Lab selection in Senior year is being changed from CEE 3040 or 3120 at 1 credit hour to CEE 3040, 3120 and/or 3430 at 2 credit hours.

Motion.  Dr. Huo moved to approve the addition and changes effective Spring 2009.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Loutzenheiser and carried.

Informational Item  
The Fundamentals in Engineering Exam is no longer a requirement for graduation.  However, we encourage students to take the exam during their last semester on campus.

Motion.  Dr. Parke moved to approve the changes effective August 2008.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Stein and carried.

Approval of Course Deletion and Curriculum Change from the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering  

In a memorandum dated January 28, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

The Women and Gender Studies Curriculum Committee requests the addition of the following course to the Social/Behavioral Sciences category of the general education core:

Interdisciplinary, team-taught examination of issues in women and gender studies.

Motion.  Dr. Eisen moved to approve the addition to the General Education core effective Spring 2009.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Roberts.

NOTE:  Approval of this motion is contingent upon approval by  the TBR General Education Committee this Fall.

Approval of Curriculum Change from the School of Agriculture 

In a memorandum dated February 6, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Other Such Matters  

Dr. Armistead alerted the committee that TBR is in the process of revising policies, guidelines and forms for new academic programs or units and for modifications of existing academic programs.  He stated that he will inform this committee and the Academic Council when they are approved and available.
