Approval of New Concentration from the Department of Earth Sciences
In a memorandum dated October 19, 2006, approval was requested for the following:
Curriculum Change:
Create a new concentration, Geography, in the Geoscience B.S. degree
program.
The Department of Earth Sciences proposes to add a new concentration in geography to its current program, which includes concentrations in geology, geographical information systems, and environmental geology. The new concentration is a response to interest in high school students, and students in the general education courses GEOG 1120 - Human Geography and GEOG 1130-Geography of Natural Hazards who are seeking a degree with this concentration. Further, the department's B.S. degree is low producing, and the department expects that this concentration will increase the number of graduating seniors so that, ultimately, the degree can be removed from the low producing list.
This new concentration will be accommodated without the introduction of any new course, and without teaching any current course on a more frequent basis. Therefore, no additional costs will be incurred by the initiation of this concentration.
Applicable TBR forms are on file in the Office of the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Motion. Dr. Harrison moved to approve the new concentration effective Fall 2007. The motion was seconded by Dr. Mills and carried.

Other Such Matters
Summer Reading Program - Dr. Barker
In on going efforts to increase retention and graduation rates, Dr. Barker along with personnel in academic and student affairs areas have discussed a Summer Reading Program, which is currently used by a number of universities with good success.
Through the SOAR program, entering freshmen would receive a book (same book for all) to begin reading through the summer. The intent would be that when the students leave SOAR they will know who their 1020 instructor will be and interaction between student and instructor can begin prior to their arrival on campus. The Summer Reading Program would help connect freshmen with a common activity.
Dr. Barker stated no decision regarding this program has been made. At present, a start-up date of Fall 2007 is projected. Dr. Barker stated he would welcome any input on this program.
Request to Double-Check Course Credit Hours - Jerri Winningham
Ms. Winningham asked that those working with courses and credit hours double-check to make sure the correct credit hours have been entered into the system. Faculty are encouraged to check the credit hours when loading their grades.
The meeting adjourned at 3:45.
