In a memorandum dated October 28, approval was requested for following:

On pp. 116-17 of the current TTU Undergraduate Catalog, remove both
instances of the footnote to the junior year of each English BA curriculum:
English majors must have proficiency in one foreign language which includes 6
hours of upper-division courses in that language.
Replace with:
English majors meet the foreign language requirement by successfully completing
a foreign language course at the 2020 level or higher (excluding "Country
and People") with a grade of C or better. Electives must include at
least 6 credit hours in any upper-division courses in FREN, GERM, or SPAN (all

Approval of Curriculum and Course Changes from the Department of Sociology and Political Science
In a memorandum dated October 10, approval was requested for the following:
Course Change:
From: POLS 2220 State and Local Government
To: POLS 3330 State and Local Government
Non-Substantive Change:
Lower POLS 2210 to POLS 1000
Curriculum Changes:
1. Delete POLS 2210 and POLS 2220 from the required courses for POLS majors.
2. Add POLS 1000, and UNIV 1020 as required courses for POLS majors.
Motion. Dr. Neapolitan moved to approve the changes, effective Fall 2006. The motion was seconded by Dr. Giesbrecht-Bettoli and carried.

UNIV 1030. Learning
Strategies. Lec. 2, Credit 1 (2 credits for faculty).
Allow UNIV 1030 to replace the requirement for DSP0800 as has been fulfilled by University 1020 in the past, with continued manual input of data to the software to show completion for State reporting purposes.
UNIV 1030 Learning Strategies is a college-level course and will carry institutional credit and/or credit within department curricula at the discretion of the individual departments.
UNIV 1030 will be conducted as a "Special Topics" course for students who have already completed the requirement but are required to take it as a result of being readmitted on probation or after suspension. In this capacity, the course could be taken more than once with special permission under specified circumstances.
This course would continue to appear in the University catalog, with the
following modifications:

Strategies
Lec. 2, Credit 2
This course is no longer offered TTU. To complete requirements for this
course, register for UNIV 1030, Learning Strategies, and complete the course
with a grade of at least a "C". For further information, contact
the Academic Development Program office at 931-372-3476.
Placement in Learning Strategies (UNIV 1030) is required for Students who place into two or more subject areas of DSP courses.
Course content: The learning process, including person motivation, attitudes supportive of learning, organizational planning, time management, test-taking skills, etc., with a view toward transitioning the student from high-school to university environment by encouraging students to learn to help themselves in the unfamiliar university setting.

The course is designed to strengthen the student's connection to TTU by focusing
on the development and enhancement of interpersonal relationships as a
significant component to academic success. The course utilizes in-class
and out-of-class activities designed to facilitate knowledge and skills that
promote relationships and a sense of connection to the university. Upper
division psychology students will assist the instructor and provide mentoring to
freshmen students who have chosen psychology as their major. The course
emphasizes the use of critical thinking in understanding and managing
interpersonal, social, academic and career goals.

Geosciences.

This course will introduce students interested in science to the practice of
scientific research in the field and the laboratory, with emphasis on the
geosciences. Field trips and in-class activities will stimulate critical
thinking and real-world problem-solving skills unique to the sciences.
Current geoscience-related issues will be discussed in class (e.g., Sumatra
tsunami, Himalayan earthquakes).

Sociology.
Lec. 2, Credit 1. A course required for all sociology majors, designed to assist the student in
acquiring basic knowledge and skills necessary to be a successful sociology
major. Additional focus upon personal and academic adjustments to college
in general. May be taken at the same time as SOC 1010. Must be taken
at first opportunity after declaration of sociology as a major.

1020
Lec. 2, Credit 1.
UNIV 1020 will introduce students to University life and student
resources. The students will be exposed to numerous student facilities and
programs that are already in place at TTU to foster undergraduate growth and
academic development for students majoring in POLS and for those interested
in politics and government.

Motion. Prof. Tolbert moved to approve the 1020 or equivalent proposals listed above, with the provision that they will be reexamined in the spring. The motion was seconded by Dr. Giesbrecht-Bettoli and the motion carried.

Prof. Tolbert moved to accept the following existing courses utilized for the 1020 requirement. The motion was seconded by Dr. Shriner and carried:

Prof. Tolbert proposed the following questions pertaining to UNIV 1020 to the committee:
Discussion outcomes:
#1 - 1020 courses will be added by the catalog coordinator.
#2 - Those in which a specific departmental course is required will remain in the curriculum without hours added.
#3 - Prof. Tolbert stated a list of required 1020 courses would be sent out for verification at a later date. All changes will be effective Fall 2006.
Prof. Tolbert announced that the Graduation Office is putting the graduation curricula worksheets, for every major, for the current catalog, on-line. Go to the Records Office webpage for viewing.
