Approval of Update for 2008-09 Catalog of Repeatable Upper Division Courses from the Appalachian Center for Craft

In a memorandum dated April 14, 2008, approval was requested for the following:

Clarification of Art Course Descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog:

All of our upper division studio classes at the Craft Center are intended to be repeatable, which I believe was specified when they were originally proposed for the curriculum. It has been the practice to allow these courses to be repeated for credit for at least 15 years, and in some cases the courses must be repeated in order to fulfill degree requirements. They are not explicitly described as repeatable in the current undergraduate catalog, but they should be so designated. In order to avoid confusion, the following phrase should be added to course description of each of the following courses.

"May be repeated up to 12 credit hours."

All BFA majors in studio concentrations must complete at least 12 credits of Senior Thesis, which cannot be done without repeating the course. In addition, some students and their Senior Thesis advisors determine that the best outcome for the student’s portfolio development will be achieved if an extra semester is added to the process prior to graduation. Therefore, the following phrase should be added to course description of each Senior Thesis course.

"May be repeated up to 18 credit hours."

ART 4410     Senior Thesis in Painting
ART 4510     Senior Thesis in Ceramics
ART 4610     Senior Thesis in Fiber
ART 4710     Senior Thesis in Glass
ART 4810     Senior Thesis in Metals
ART 4910     Senior Thesis in Wood

These updates of the course descriptions in the Undergraduate Catalog do not change any of the individual course descriptions, nor do they change the requirements of any of the BFA concentrations.
