Report on Approval of Changes to Curriculum Committee Procedures

Prof. Tolbert reported the Curriculum Committee Procedure changes proposed to the Administrative Council were approved.  See changes in Bold.

II.  PHILOSOPHY - The curriculum Committee of Tennessee Technological University strongly affirms that the curricula of all credit-bearing programs devolve from the faculty.  Each unit or departmental faculty approves proposals as a committee of the whole or as faculty representatives on a curriculum committee.  Approved proposals are forwarded to the college curriculum committee and, if approved there, to the Curriculum Committee of Tennessee Technological University for final approval.

IX. AMENDMENT OF PROCEDURES:
These procedures can be amended at any regular meeting of the Committee by a majority vote of the total membership, provided that the amendment has been submitted in writing to each member at least one week prior to the meeting.  Amendments to Procedures are subject to final approval by the Academic Council.

X. COMMITTEE ACTION AND REVIEW:
Actions of this Committee are subject to review by the Academic Council and approval by the President.  All new programs are referred to Academic Council and University Assembly for action.

Approval of Curriculum Changes from the Department of English

In a memorandum dated March 31,  2005, approval was requested for the following:

SUBJECT:  Clarification and Change for the English-Communications Professional Communication Curriculum (to be effective immediately) This proposal will not create any costs.

I. Clarification

Currently, the catalog does not specify what foreign language courses are required for English-Communication Professional Communication majors; the catalog states that just six hours are required.

An asterisk should be added next to the foreign language hours stating that any six hours of foreign language courses will fulfill the requirement.

II. Change in Humanities/Fine Arts Requirement

Currently, both the Public Service Writing and Scientific and Technical Writing options for the Professional Communication concentration under the English-Communications Bachelor of Science include six hours of Humanities courses. Because nine hours are now required by TBR, another three-hour course needs to be added.  The change would appear as follows:

FROM: Humanities Fine Arts Elective (3 hrs)

TO: Humanities Fine Arts Electives (6 hrs)

World Literature (ENGL 2330) is required already under the thirty hours of English and constitutes the remainder of the Humanities requirement.

The above change would apply to both options.

As a result of this change, general elective hours will need to decrease by three. This change would appear as follows:

Public Service Writing Option

FROM: Electives (12 hrs)

TO:  Electives (9 hrs)

Scientific and Technical Writing Option

FROM:  Electives (9 hrs)

TO:  Electives (6 hrs)

Motion.  Dr. Eisen moved to approve the changes effective immediately.  The motion was seconded by Dr. Faw and the motion carried.
