TIMELY TIP on Destiny

“It is choice not chance that determines your destiny.”  ~ Jean Nidetch

The above quotes would be appropriate to use in a unit of study on a goals and decision making in FACS or Career Connections. As a closure for the lessons in this unit of study have the students identify one of the following: (1) how small steps daily lead to a big difference over time, (2) how choices impact goals, or (3) why are deadlines a requirement in reaching goals.

TIMELY TIP on Budgeting

“Beware of little expenses; a small leak will sink a great ship.”  Benjamin Franklin

This quote could be utilized in a unit of study on budgeting in FACS or Consumer Economics specifically fixed expenses vs. flexible expenses. As a closure have the students identify (by composing a few sentences) how flexible expenses can be like a small leak in a great ship.

TIMELY TIP on Career Selection

“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
~ Confucius

This would be great as an introduction to the class Career Connections. Have the students search the web sites TCIDS Tennessee Career Information Delivery system and KUDER Tennessee College Careers Planning System.  These sites can be found on the Tennessee Department of Education Career Technical Education Home page. Have the students complete the activities to determine a possible career. Students could journal a reflective paragraph on how the quote, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life” describes the importance of careful planning in career selection.

TIMELY TIP on Respect

“Every human being, of whatever origin, of whatever station, deserves respect. We must each respect otherseven as we respect ourselves.”

U. Thant – Secretary-General of the United Nations 1961-1971

Choose Respect is an initiative to help adolescents form healthy relationships to prevent dating abuse before it starts. This national effort is designed to motivate adolescents to challenge harmful beliefs about dating abuse and take steps to form respectful relationships. Choose Respect reaches out to adolescents, ages 11 to 14 because they are still forming attitudes and beliefs that will affect how they are treated and how they treat others. The initiative also connects with parents, teachers, youth leaders and other caregivers who influence the lives of young teens. Choose Respect messages are supported by a variety of materials including eCards, posters, bookmarks, pocket guides, online games, television and radio spots, activity ideas, and clickable quizzes that inspire youth to choose respect. The program also offers the award-winning video Causing Pain: Real Stories of Dating Abuse and Violence, which features compelling stories of teens, parents, and professional who have been in or witnessed abusive relationships.

TIMELY TIP on Growth

Peter Marshall stated, "When we long for life without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure".

Have students list the difficulties of being a teenager, parent, grandparent, and others. Discuss how those difficulties may make one stronger and wiser. Question: Should we welcome difficult times in our life? Seek to answer this with more than a Yes or No answer.
