ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (Ornamental Horticulture) - School of Agriculture

Full-time, twelve-month, tenure-track appointment to begin March 2003.

Tennessee Technological University is a state supported institution with an enrollment of approximately 8,900 students, located in Cookeville, Tennessee, a city of 26,000. The School of Agriculture has 11 teaching faculty members and an enrollment of approximately 230 students. Academic programs are offered in Horticulture, Nursery and Landscape Management, Agronomy and Soils, Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Education and Communications, Agricultural Engineering Technology, Animal and Pre-Veterinary Science, and Environmental Agriscience. Facilities include laboratories for teaching and research with modern equipment, teaching and research greenhouses with laboratories, and a 300-acre farm with three acres under irrigation for field research, and an irrigated container production area.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Horticulture required. Emphasis in the production of woody ornamental plants preferred. Demonstrated abilities for effective teaching and academic advising of undergraduate students preferred. Demonstrated performance in research, public service, and scholarly activity in woody ornamentals preferred. Experience in container production, weed science, plant propagation, and /or nutrition preferred. Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with faculty, alumni, students, nurserymen and agricultural groups and agencies preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Professional horticulturist with the Nursery Research and Service Center. This program provides assistance to the nursery industry of Middle Tennessee. Research (30%): Conduct basic and applied research program oriented towards problem solving or development of practices that will improve nursery production. Service (30%): Provide consultation and assistance to the nurserymen of Middle Tennessee. Teaching (40%): Teach undergraduate courses (possibilities include Nursery Management, Dendrology, Landscape Plant Materials, and Integrated Pest Management) and serve as academic advisor.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
