ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF BANDS and
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC EDUCATION – Department of Music and Art

This is a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track position
to begin August 1, 2003.
Tennessee Technological University is a constituent
university of the Tennessee Board of Regents with an enrollment of 8,900
students. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music, the
Department of Music and Art has 24 full-time music faculty, 160 music majors,
and offers the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and the Bachelor of Music in
Performance, with options in composition, instrumental and vocal music, jazz,
and piano. A Master of Arts in Education is offered collaboratively with the
College of Education. The University is located in Cookeville, a city of 35,000,
midway between Nashville and Knoxville. Cookeville’s cultural offerings
include theatre, a PBS and NPR affiliate, museums, libraries, art galleries, and
the Bryan Symphony Orchestra.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree (or equivalent) required,
doctorate preferred. Doctorate required for appointment at Associate Professor
rank. An exemplary record of at least three years full-time relevant P-12 school
music teaching is required. Evidence of effective teaching, successful
marching band directing, a strong record of recruiting, and professional
activity and achievement as a conductor at the college-level required for
appointment at Associate Professor rank and preferred for appointment at
Assistant Professor rank. Experience with the use of computer and multimedia
technology in teaching and a commitment to diversity are required. The
successful candidate will be active in research, publication, and professional
presentations, and will have demonstrated leadership in music education.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS: Direct the Golden Eagle Marching Band and the Golden
Eagle Brass Basketball Band including administrative duties, drill design, band
camp, rehearsals, performances, etc. Conduct the Concert Band. Teach secondary
instrumental methods courses for music majors. Supervise school-based field
experiences throughout the instrumental music curriculum. Additional duties
include advising music education majors, building and maintaining professional
relationships with public school music teachers, and recruiting majors to the
program. Other responsibilities determined by candidate's qualifications and
departmental needs.
RANK
AND SALARY: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience.

performance, and a videotape containing both a recent marching band performance

DAT’s, CDR-W’s, or mini discs), and copies of official transcripts (official
transcripts and/or documentation of educational qualifications will be required
