ARTIST IN RESIDENCE (GLASS) – Appalachian Center for Crafts
Account #2-10338; Position #138120
The Appalachian Center for Crafts is seeking an Artist in
Residence (AIR) of exceptional talent to provide support in the Glass
Department. The purpose of the AIR program is to provide a creative
residential environment for emerging professional artists and to broaden student
and faculty awareness of new approaches and techniques. The Craft Center's
mission is to offer the finest studio professional craft education through the
Bachelor of Fine Arts, Certificate of Accomplishment and workshop programs, and
to provide a regional cultural resource through the workshop, exhibition, and
sales gallery programs. Each department: Clay, Fibers, Glass, Metals, Wood, and
Exhibitions offers an artist in residence position. Post MFA and BFA students
who wish to further enhance their skills or to complete a portfolio are urged to
apply. Term of the residency is from August 18, 2003 through August 17, 2004.
The residency is renewable for a second year, subject to performance review.

QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or equivalent professional experience preferred.
Applicants must hold a minimum of a BFA degree or equivalent. Selection will consider the candidate’s potential artistic
and professional growth within the residency, technical skills in studio and
equipment maintenance, and potential for instructional support.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with
faculty, staff, students and the public is required. Prior residents may
reapply.
ESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS: A thorough working knowledge of glass studio operations
and equipment use. AIR will be
involved in general studio maintenance, repair, and supervision of the hot and
cold glass studios. AIR’s will be
expected to work 20 hours per week with a short shift in the library.
Instructional
support: Includes occasional
teaching duties during faculty absence. Resident
will periodically give appropriate class demonstrations and/or participate in
class discussions. Resident is
welcome to participate in the intermediate and advanced classes as well as the
midterm and final group review. In
exchange for appropriate compensation, resident may be asked to teach workshop
classes in glass.
Each
Artist in Residence must produce a significant body of studio work while showing
a high level of technical expertise. In
consultation with the department head, expectations of the AIR’s studio work
will be reviewed after arrival.
COMPENSATION: Single occupancy sleeping rooms with private bath
(whether married or single, cooking and lounge facilities are shared with other
residents), individual studio space and 24-hour studio access are provided.
No stipend or wages are provided; however, opportunities for additional
employment through outreach programs may be available.
