Advisor - A professional advisor or faculty member who meets with
designated students each semester to help make curriculum choices
and discuss progress toward achieving educational goals.
Articulation Agreement - A document that outlines
the curriculum agreed to by a community college and Tennessee
Technological University to satisfy the degree requirements.
Audit - Taking a course but not for credit. Auditing
students pay required fees and attend class but are not required
to complete assignments or take exams. Must fill out an audit
card and turn into the Records Office in Derryberry Hall, Room
102 before the second week of classes.
Change of Major Form - A form that is completed
to change your major from one department to another department.
It must be completed by you and signed by your previous advisor
and your new advisor. To complete the change, the form must be
turned into the Records Office in Derryberry Hall, Room 102.
Confirm your schedule: Confirming your schedule
lets the Business Office know that you are going to attend for
that semester. Even if you have financial aid or scholarships
for the full cost of fees, you must confirm or your schedule
will be dropped after the fee payment deadline. If your schedule
is dropped, you will need to go through the advisement process
again.
Course - A subject or class in which instruction
is offered within a given period of time for a semester and for
which credit toward a degree is given.
Course Load - The course load is the total number
of semester hours or credit hours in which a student is enrolled
for a semester. An average course load at TTU is 12 to18 hours
for a student attending full time.
Credit Hours (also called Semester Hours) - One
credit hour or one semester hour is usually assigned for each
55 minutes of class per week for a semester. For example, Composition
I (ENGL 1010) is a three-credit hour course. Therefore, a student
taking Composition I would attend class three hours each week
and receive three credit hours for the course. Science courses
are generally 4 credit hours. There is a classroom lecture, and
then a laboratory portion.
Curriculum - The whole body of courses offered
for study by the college, or by a particular department.
Eagle Card - Identification card that can be used
to gain access to sporting events, fitness center, meals, library,
center stage events, etc.
Elective - A subject or course, which a student
may choose from courses that are not required for a specific
degree program.
Full-time Student - A student enrolled in 12 or
more semester hours of coursework per semester. In the summer
4 hours is considered the minimum full-time load per session.
Grant - Financial aid that does not have to be
paid back.
Grade Point Average (GPA) - An average obtained
by dividing the total number of grade points (A=4; B=3; C=2;
D=1) earned by the total number of hours of coursework attempted.
Humanities - Courses selected from the general
education core in humanities. For example: art appreciation,
literature, foreign culture, music appreciation, philosophy,
or theatre.
Loan - Financial aid that must be paid back, usually
within a specified time.
PAC/PIN - Personal Access Code - This is your 6-digit
number that was assigned to you by the Admissions Office. It
doesn’t change unless you change it. It is used for registering
and entering into the Eagle OnLine system.
Part-time Student - A student enrolled in less
than 12 credit hours of coursework per semester. (Summer semester
excluded.)
Prerequisite - A course requirement that must be
met before enrolling in a particular course.
RAC - Registration Access Code – Your 4 digit
code that is used to register each semester. You get this from
your advisor and it changes each semester.
RODP - Regents Online Degree Program – courses
or degrees granted through the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR).
Semester - A half-year of college. A period of
instruction lasting 15 weeks. Two semesters fall and spring,
ordinarily comprise a college year. The third semester,
summer, is optional and may be used as a time to catch up or
get ahead.
Syllabus - A precise outline of course expectations
stating the required textbook(s), assignments and dates due,
test dates, grading and policies, research papers, as well as
other requirements.
Transcript - An official record of academic history,
provided by high schools or other colleges or universities previously
attended. When sending transcripts to the TTU Admissions Office,
they must bear the official seal of the school attended.
