Required Texts:

Johnson, R., Hard Time, 3rd. ed. (Belmont, CA: Wadsworth, 2002). Fields, C.(ed.), Controversial Issues in Corrections, (Boston: Allyn & Bacon, 1999).

Class Reports:

Each student will do a brief summary of one of the readings (may be handwritten or typed) and make an oral report on the assigned date. Be ready on the given date even though we may not get to you at that time. The written reports (a few paragraphs) are due on the day that you actually make your oral report. Failure to make a report will result in the reduction of the final course grade one (1) letter, e.g. A to B, B to C, etc....

Tests and Attendance Policy:

There will be three tests: two exams (worth 30% each) and a final exam worth 40% of your course grade. The following scale applies to all tests and in the computation of course grades.

A = 92 - 100
B = 83 - 91
C = 73 - 82
D = 65 - 72
F = 0 - 64

NOTE: Grades are never publicly posted. To receive your final grade before official reports are mailed you can use the Eagle Line or you may give me a stamped, self-addressed card or envelope on the day of the final. Grades will be mailed to you immediately after your examination is scored and your average calculated. The policy applies to ALL except graduating seniors who may personally contact me about their final grade.

After each test a curve will be established if scores warrant it. To be on the curve, a student may have been absent from class no more than four (4) times for ANY reason during the entire semester. Once the fifth cut is taken, grades will be based on all original test scores (past and future). If you come late to class, it is your responsibility to see me immediately after class in order to record your presence.

Disabled Students:

See the Director, Disability Service Office in the University Center, Room 112 during the first week of the semester for necessary arrangements.

The Tour:

There will be a VOLUNTARY tour of a correctional institution that may be limited in size (depending upon current Department of Corrections policies). Whether you choose to take this tour or decline to do so has absolutely no effect on your grade for the course. Once again, it is strictly optionalwhether you attend or not.
