Dr. Mahesh Panchagnula

Mechanical Engineering

TTU

To wet, or not to wet?  That is the question:

The dilemma that liquids face near solid surfaces

 Abstract

Surface tension is a property of liquids that nature has employed well for selfish gains. This property that originates from imbalance in attractive forces is inherently multiscale and hence presents interesting implications in organisms spanning several length scales. From birds to insects, this talk will present a broad overview of how surface tension is adapted into natural systems. A biomimetic model of imbibing these features into artificial systems will also be discussed.

 About the speaker

Mahesh Panchagnula is currently serving as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Tennessee Technological University. Prior to that, he was placed as Research Associate at Lehigh University and as Research Engineer with Goodrich Aerospace. He has obtained his MS and PhD degrees from Purdue University and B.Tech (ME) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India. Prof. Panchagnula’s research interests are in the areas of spray and atomization theory, as well as liquid fuel combustion. He has authored several journal papers and presented at national and international conferences.  He is the 2008 winner of the TTU Sigma Xi Research Award.
