The 2009 Annual Initiation and Awards Banquet will be held Thursday April 16 in the Executive Lounge and Dining Room of the Roaden University Center. Our visiting Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer this year will be Dr. John Simpson of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The title of Dr. Simpson's talk is Superhydrophobic Nanostructured Materials.
Abstract
Space elevators, nano-robots repairing damaged human cells, ultra-strong
ultra-light materials! These are examples of what might be in store for the
future as a result of nanoscience. While these particular nanotechnologies may
be years away, researcher at Oak Ridge National Lab have developed an amazing
nanotechnology that is here today. ORNL's Superhydrophobic Nanostructured
Materials repel water so strongly that you won't believe your eyes as water
bounces off these materials as if the drops were rubber balls. This presentation
will describe how such materials are made and demonstrate their interaction with
water.
