Comments

The new committee chair, Ms. Elrod, welcomed the group to the Staff Advisory Committee meeting at 10:00 a.m. and introduced President Bell to welcome the new members and thank existing members for their hard work over the years.

President Bell started by discussing the state budget in saying this would be another difficult year. However, Tennessee Tech has set back funds to cover this year’s budget cuts. Even through tough economic times, Tech has three new building projects underway: residence hall demolition and construction; Hooper Eblen renovations; and site preparation for the Ray Morris Hall which will house the Millard Oakley STEM Center.  These are privately funded projects with some support from federal grants. Dorm demolition and construction is funded by housing bonds.

A grand opening and ribbon cutting, set for October 3, will honor the Student Health Services, now housed in the School of Nursing Building. Health Services are now open to faculty, staff and students.

For the fifth year in a row, Princeton Review ranked Tennessee Tech as “Best in the Southeast” along with five other universities. Also, for the seventh year in a row, U.S. News and World Report ranked TTU among the south’s best universities. Last, Tech was ranked one of the Top 10 Public Universities in the South. At the end of the eighth day of classes, Tech’s enrollment hit a high of 10,803 students.

There are plans to improve parking, including acquisition of new property. In the mean time, shuttles are running from the intramural parking lot, north lot from the tennis courts, west lot of the engineering quad, and the University Center.

August 12 was an exciting day on campus as the university was the site of a community-wide emergency drill. The mock-crisis involved real-time reactions to a staged emergency scenario. The drill was a great mechanism to test emergency readiness and communication tools for the campus. President Bell has asked departments, groups, and individuals to address the topic of preparedness at the building level.

The Center for Management, Utilization, and Protection of Water Resources has joined forces with TTU’s school of Agriculture to engage in organic farming. The produce is sold at the Cookeville Farmer’s Market and proceeds are returned to support the Waters Farm.

TBR is reminding Tech faculty and staff that use of state resources in political activities is prohibited. This includes the displaying of campaign literature or advertisements on the premises; using any state owned facilities, including equipment for campaigning or political advertising; and engaging actively in a political campaign or attending political meetings/functions during an employee’s working day.

General Announcements

Winners of the Awesome Office contest were: Human Resources (large office competition); Math Department and Chemical Engineering Department tied for the small office competition. Women’s Center won the bulletin board category.

Athletics Department is sponsoring Purple Pride Luncheons on Mondays proceeding home football games. The next luncheon is scheduled for September 22.

On September 18, Tech’s Constitution Day speaker will be John Seigenthaler, host of NPT’s Word on Words and a noted journalist. Mr. Seigenthaler’s talk “Patriotism: Salute the Flag or Burn It?” begins at 6 p.m. in the Derryberry Hall auditorium. The presentation is open to the public.

Mike Cowan has been appointed the Director of Human Resource Services, and Jerri Winningham has been appointed Interim Director of Records and Registration.

The following comments and suggestions were reviewed:

Comments and Suggestions

1. “Tennessee Tech’s new slogan should be, The Hidden Gem of Tennessee

Ms. Brenda Elrod commented that the suggestion of a new slogan was forwarded to Public Affairs for review and consideration.

-------------

2.  “What actions have been taken concerning parking? What are the long-term plans for parking? Are there plans for a parking garage?”

Parking is available across Willow beside the baseball field and open temporary parking is available on Dixie across from the Fine Arts Building. Shuttle Buses are available for students and employees. The route and shuttle stops are posted on the TTU website. Check it now and be prepared should you need to access this service. The shuttle stops at 2:30 p.m.; therefore, should you be required to work late, you may call the campus police to escort you to your car. The master plan calls for a parking garage with 650 spaces in connection with the building of the Science & Engineering quad. The current cost estimate is $15,000 per space. The garage would not be free parking, but rental of each parking space.

-------------

3.  “Where are the suggestion boxes located?”

Suggestion boxes are on the ground floor of the UC, Derryberry, and in the HVAC Building. You may also e-mail or mail your suggestions and ideas to Ms. Elrod or any of the Staff Advisory Committee members.
