President’s Comments

Dr. McGee represented the President at the November 3 meeting.

Tennessee Tech has added two national ‘Best Value’ rankings to the recent accolades by being selected for inclusion in Princeton Review’s America’s Best College Value 2006 Guidebook, and also was recently named one of America’s 100 Best College Buys by Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc.

For the fifth consecutive year, our enrollment has increased, reaching another all-time high. Fall enrollment stands at 9,313, up about 1 percent from last fall’s 9,217. The total includes 7,255 undergraduates, and 2,058 graduate students.

The recipients of the University Clerical and Support Staff Awards have been selected for 2005. Congratulations go to the following individuals: Gwen Paul (Secretary,

Accounting & Law), Peggy Rittenberry (Secretary, Military Science), and Eddie Frizzell (Electrical Shop Supervisor, Facilities and Business Services).

Homecoming this year will feature the “Wild West” theme. There are a number of wonderful events and gatherings planned on campus for Friday, November 4, and Saturday, November 5. On Saturday, there will be a Honky-Tonk Tailgate Party Concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and participate in these great Homecoming festivities.

The next Luncheon Forum will be held on Monday, November 28, in the Tech Pride Room of the Roaden University Center at noon. Everyone is welcome to attend.

President and Mrs. Bell look forward to hosting Tennessee Tech’s Clerical and Support Christmas Luncheon on Monday, December 5, in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Roaden University Center from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

Charles Chitwood, Deputy Director, Marshall Space Flight Center, will be the December 17 commencement speaker.

Suggestions to Staff Advisory Committee

Suggestion:

Can we please have the crosswalk leading from the Pit to T.J. Farr building repainted? Drivers do not see the need to stop for pedestrians that are trying to cross this busy road.

I made a request over a year ago to Facilities and was assured that it would be taken care of, but to date, this has not been done.

Reply from Dr. Mike Nivens:

The project will be completed this winter. That crosswalk, as well as several others on campus, must be ADA accessible. Facilities is waiting for ADA funding.

Suggestion:

The staff awards, although a nice gesture, are hurtful and somewhat biased and unfair, because there are often many people who have put years of service, long hours, and dedication for the university and never receive such an award.

Because of this, it is a suggestion that consideration should be that these yearly staff awards at all levels end.

Faculty teaching awards are a separate issue because students rate faculty members. Ambassador of the month is a nice gesture.

Also, many of the staff awards write-ups are incorrect and misleading. This can also lead to hurt feelings and poor morale.

Reply:

Tennessee Tech is very fortunate to have many wonderful individuals work on our campus serving our faculty, staff, and students. One of the means of rewarding deserving individuals is through our Staff Awards. The individuals who receive the awards have been nominated by their peers and/or supervisors. A committee, composed of individuals on campus, then meet to discern the winners based on the information they have received. If deserving individuals who have been at TTU for many years are not nominated, then the committee has no knowledge of their outstanding service and, therefore, are not considered for an award.

We are pleased to be able to reward deserving individuals on our campus in this manner.

The meeting adjourned at 2:10 p.m.
