President Bell’s Comments

Nursing Building

A new proposal concerning the funding of the nursing building outlines a 20 percent state match for the $17 million project.  The proposal allows for a $2 match for every $1 raised by Tech.  The proposal is under review by the state legislators.  Demolition of Smith Quad is underway and will continue throughout the summer.  Construction on the nursing building itself is expected to begin within one year.

Budget

State employees can expect a three percent salary increase for the 04-05 fiscal year.  This increase includes higher education employees.  A one percent bonus is also being considered with two options.  The first option is a one-time across-the-board bonus.  The second option is a bonus based on longevity that puts new employees at a disadvantage.  The two prominent budget issues for the University are operating funds and construction funding.  The University is preparing for a five percent cut in the operations budget.  The positive side is that plans were made ahead of time for a reduction like this; therefore, the negative effects will not be as greatly felt.

Athletics Director

Tennessee Tech is excited about the hiring of new Athletics Director (AD), Mark Wilson.  Mark will begin his service as AD on July 1, 2004.  We are pleased to have Mark and the Wilson family as members of the Tech community.

Spring Graduation

On May 15, 2004, 999 students will participate in the graduation ceremony, which amounts to ten percent of the student body.  Projections for next year indicate an increase in transfer students, but new freshmen numbers may be down.  Our present growth rate is within the funding band, therefore, funding for the University will not be affected.  Tennessee Tech remains committed to generating new student growth.

Nominations of a new Chairperson and Vice Chairperson for the year 2004-2005

Dianne Klein nominated Gina Padgett to serve as the SAC chairperson for 2004-2005.  The committee unanimously approved.  Sheila McNeal nominated Carol Holley for the position of vice chairperson for 2004-2005.  The nomination was unanimously approved.
