Election of Officers

Motion by Ms. McMillan to nominate Ms. Jared as the chairperson for the 2002-03 fiscal year; Ms. Zimmerman seconded. Nominations were ceased, and Ms. Jared was elected chairperson.

Ms. McMillan made a motion to nominate Ms. Choate as vice chairperson for the 2002-03 fiscal year. The motion was duly seconded and nominations ceased. Ms. Choate was elected vice chairperson.

Other such matters

The committee reviewed the following idea/suggestion that referred to the SAC minutes of March 7, 2002:

Please give Tech employees another chance to vote/decide about the required annual days to be taken during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The last survey was in 1985 and the majority voted for one extra day at that time. It is believed there will be more than one negative response IF employees are allowed to vote again. Thanks for considering this request.

Ms. Chambers reported that the TBR has approved the holiday schedule for Tennessee Tech through 2004. The committee briefly discussed the suggestion and agreed to no action by the committee at the present time.

Remarks by President Bell

President Bell made the following remarks to the committee via a prerecorded message:

Budget situation—It has been an up-and-down year, with a lot of uncertainty in budgetary matters. And that uncertainty will continue through most of the summer. We will be dealing with program reviews, 120-hour reviews, cost containments, and hopefully new budgets.

A University Task Force has been formed to complete program reviews. Reports on program reviews will be due to the TBR on October 15.

With all these detriments, we are still moving forward on a number of important initiatives, like:

· A new residence hall—bids are in for the construction of the new residence hall complex, and actual construction should start in early June. The new residence hall is scheduled to open to students at the start of fall 2003. It will house a maximum of 360 individuals, including resident advisors for each floor and a resident manager.

· New scholarship endowments including a major gift from the Boeing Corporation

· Endowments for the President’s School in Information Technology

· Endowments for programs in information systems, computer science and computer engineering

· Endowments for the Challenger Learning Center that will attract students to Tech beginning in the fifth grade to study science, social science and mathematics

· A new building for the School of Nursing

The University’s tradition of excellence will continue to be the focus as we move forward. With your help we will continue in our endeavors.
