President’s Comments

Dr. McGee welcomed members to the meeting.

Drs. Marvin Barker and Leo McGee will be retiring June 29, 2007.  Also, Dr. Darrell Garber, Dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Glen Johnson, Dean of the College of Engineering, will retire in June and return to the classroom as faculty.  Dr. Jack Armistead announced that he would return to a faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences, but he has agreed to serve as the Interim Provost/Vice-President for Academic Affairs.  Dr. Paul Semmes will serve as Interim Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Larry Peach will serve as Interim Dean in the College of Education, and Dr. David Huddleston will serve as Interim Dean in the College of Engineering.  The vacancies created by those serving in interim capacities will be filled as followed:  Dr. Kurt Eisen will serve as Interim Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Matt Smith will serve as Interim Chair of Curriculum and Instruction, and Dr. Sharon Huo will serves as Interim Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

A search committee for the position of provost/vice-president is being formed, and initial ads for the position will be out by late Spring or early Summer.  Interviews for the position will take place during September to October, with an appointment for November.  The dean positions will be filled following the appointment of the provost.  These vacancies will allow the university to focus on its commitment to diversity, an area it has fallen behind on in the past several years.

The 2007 Holiday Schedule is available.  In 2007, there will be 14 holidays, including January 1, 2008.  The next holiday closing will be Good Friday, April 6.

The clerical and support skill levels chart was recently updated.  Personnel whose pay rate was below the new skill level minimum received a pay increase in their January paychecks.

Dr. Stinson chairs the Budget Model Subcommittee which was assigned the task of reviewing the budgeting process and making recommendations for restructuring the budget. The subcommittee recently met with the Budget Advisory Committee to share their findings and recommendations.

The Governor’s proposed budget is now available. The proposed budget places an emphasis on K-12 education.  The budget includes a 1% across-the-board salary increase and a 2% one-time performance based bonus.  Also, it is proposed to extend the lottery scholarship for entrance to a community college to anyone who makes an average score of 19 or better on the ACT.  The proposed budget also includes a recommendation for higher education capital outlay.

Employees recently named Tech Ambassadors include:

December 2006:     Nancy Jared, University Recreation & Fitness Center

January 2007:         Sonya Haney, Human Resources

February 2007:       Sheila Kendrick, Graduate Admissions

March 2007:           Lisa Rice, Student Success Center

President and Mrs. Bell will again host the Clerical and Support Staff annual brunch at Walton House on April 23.

Also on April 23, a Luncheon Forum will be held at 11:45 in the Tech Pride Room.  Various faculty, staff and student awards will be presented.

Suggestions/Comments

1. Get rid of the suggestion box.

There was discussion of replacing the idea box with an online idea box.  Two issues arise with an online box.  The first is finding a permanent place on the web and second who would maintain it.  Also, there was discussion on the anonymity of the persons making the suggestions.  The consensus of the committee was that all suggestions remain anonymous. The idea boxes will remain located in Derryberry, the University Center and Facilities. The committee will continue review and discussion concerning the online submission possibilities.

The meeting adjourned at 2 p.m.
