Obtain Funding Opportunity Text: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-08-227.html
Funding Opportunity Description: -Purpose: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible institutions to develop or enhance research training opportunities for individuals interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral and clinical research. Many of the NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this grant mechanism exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for students in health professional schools during the summer. In addition, the Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant may be used to support other types of predoctoral and postdoctoral training in focused, often emerging scientific areas relevant to the mission of the funding IC. The proposed training must be in either basic, behavioral or clinical research aspects of the health-related sciences. This program is intended to encourage graduate and/or health professional students to pursue research careers by exposure to and short-term involvement in the health- related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of research.-Mechanism of Support: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) will utilize the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35).-Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards: The number of applications funded will vary and depend upon the number of meritorious applications determined by the official review process.

Obtain Funding Opportunity Text: Campus Suicide Prevention Grants
Funding Opportunity Description: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2009 for Campus Suicide Prevention Grants. The purpose of this program is to facilitate a comprehensive approach to preventing suicide in institutions of higher education. This program is designed to assist colleges and universities in their efforts to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and behavioral health problems, such as depression and substance abuse, which put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. The Campus Suicide Prevention Grant program is one of SAMHSA's infrastructure grant programs. SAMHSA's Infrastructure Grants support an array of activities to help the grantee build a solid foundation for delivering and sustaining effective mental health prevention and treatment services. SAMHSA recognizes that each applicant will start from a unique point in developing infrastructure and will serve populations/communities with specific needs. Awardees may pursue diverse strategies and methods to achieve their infrastructure development goals. Successful applicants will provide a coherent and detailed conceptual ?roadmap? of the process by which they have assessed or intend to assess suicide prevention needs and plan/implement infrastructure development strategies that meet those needs. The plan put forward in the grant application must show the linkages among needs, the proposed infrastructure development strategy, and increased system capacity that will enhance and sustain effective prevention programs and services. The Campus Suicide Prevention Grant program is authorized under the Garrett Lee Smith Memorial Act (Section 520E-2 of the Public Health Service Act, as amended). This announcement addresses Healthy People 2010 focus area 18 (Mental Health and Mental Disorders).

Title: Barred Owl Lethal Control Case Study
Post Date: 07-31-2008
Agency: Department of the Interior
Obtain Funding Opportunity Text: Not Available
Funding Opportunity Description: Funding is available through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Red Bluff Fish and Wildlife Office, Endangered Species Program. The funding will be used to evaluate the environmental effects of a proposal to implement one or more case studies that will experimentally remove barred owls that have colonized northern and California spotted owl habitats in California in study areas that have adequate baseline information so that we can assess spotted owl response. In areas of barred owl removal, monitoring will occur for at least 5 years to assess changes in spotted owl site occupancy and reproduction. The information learned from these case studies will contribute to the knowledge base of competitive interactions between spotted owls and barred owls and be used to recommend management actions that reduce the negative effects on spotted owls and promote recovery of northern spotted owl across its range as well as the conservation of California spotted owl.
Title: Hydrological Modeling Support Related to Dam Removal and Water Allocation on the Klamath River
Post Date: 07-29-2008
Agency: Department of the Interior
Obtain Funding Opportunity Text: Not Available
Funding Opportunity Description: This project is to provide hydrologic modeling support and review related to confidential settlement negotiations related to dam removal and water allocation on the Klamath River. The services are to provide technical support, and will not provide advocacy for any particular party or parties to the settlement. Specifically, the cooperator has expertise in the specific model being developed to predict future flows under any number of future scenarios, including those embodied in draft and/or final settlement agreements. The goal of the current contract is to allow the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and its partners in Settlement Negotiations on matters related to the Klamath River, to simulate water management scenarios in a computer model of the hydrology of the upper Klamath Basin in order to conduct due diligence and understand the implications of potential settlement terms. This computer model, which is build on the Water Resources Integrated Modeling System (WRIMS) platform developed by the California Department of Water Resources, simulates the operation of the Upper Klamath Lake, the Klamath River, the Klamath Irrigation Project, tributaries above Upper Klamath Lake, as well as Clear Lake and Gerber Reservoir on the Lost River for the historic period of reservoir inflow data in response to different assumptions about water allocation between: (1) water needed to satisfy ecosystem protection objectives in Klamath River below Keno, Oregon; (2) water deliveries to the Klamath Irrigation Project; and (3) water held to meet ecosystem objectives in Upper Klamath Lake, as well as other factors. The USFWS and other settlement parties would like to use this model to evaluate settlement strategies that consider: (1) possible changes in inflow to Upper Klamath Lake associated with the acquisition of certain water rights and their conversion to in stream flows; (2) physical alternation of the upper Klamath Lake which would increase its capacity and change its bathometric properties; (3) volumetric limitations of the water made available to farmers in the Klamath Irrigation Project on an annual basis; and (4) tradeoffs between the allocation of water between Upper Klamath Lake and Lower Klamath River objectives in times of shortage.Under this contract the Cooperator will manipulate the Klamath WRIMS model so that it can accommodate these sorts of scenarios.
