Library

In June 1989, the Library occupied a new 122,000 square foot building with 105,172 assignable square feet. This facility almost doubled the amount of library space and the number of available seats.

The Library contains approximately 336,025 books; 129,372 bound periodical volumes; 165,042 volumes of U.S. Government publications; and 1,430,111 pieces of various types of microforms. The Library is the only depository for federal publications in the Upper Cumberland Region. The Library receives 3,805 serial publications, of which 46 are current newspapers and 3,201 are current periodicals. The Archives contains approximately 3,522.6 linear feet of materials. The map collection contains 60,501 maps.

The Media Center, a division of the Library, contains audiovisual and microcomputer materials as well as the equipment required to use these materials. The Media Center has 18,652 titles in such formats as projection films, slides, videocassettes, audiocassettes, multi-media instructional kits, and computer software. The Center is the distribution and scheduling point for the campus closed-circuit television system. In total, the Library has 2,145,349 items of library materials in the various formats.

The collections include titles in a wide range of subject areas, but they are primarily designed to support the curricular needs of University faculty and students. To a degree, the collections support faculty research. The development of the government publications collection has the additional purpose of serving the public. Specialized, small collections of library materials also exist within the University to serve specific needs; but while these contribute to the resources of the University, they are not part of the Library and, thus, are not available to all the Library's publics.

Library functions and services are administered through the four divisions of Public Services, Bibliographic Control, Collection Development, and Media Services. The Library staff consists of the director, 12 librarians and an archivist who have faculty status and rank, 17 support staff, and student assistants equivalent to 10.8 full-time staff.

The Library is a member of the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET). SOLINET is a regional network of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), which is the nation's largest bibliographic network. The majority of interlibrary loans are made through OCLC. FAX and Ariel transmission are available for interlibrary loans. Database searches for the University community are available through LOCKHEED-DIALOG and STN. The Library participates in several consortiums of libraries for sharing materials. Sixty-three databases are available through the Internet. The integrated automation system from SIRSI is operational. This system allows access to the Library's holdings through the campus network that now reaches virtually every building on campus. Web access is available. The Library has agreements that allow the faculty to use the libraries of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and most other research libraries in the nation.
