Joan Derryberry Art Gallery season opens Aug. 24

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 11, 2009) — Sandy Lane, an artist whose work blurs the lines between drawing, painting, sculpture and installation, will open the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery’s 2009-2010 season on Aug. 24.

Lane, an assistant professor and drawing coordinator at Metropolitan State College of Denver, is known as an intermedia artist, whose work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from University of Colorado at Boulder and a master’s degree in fine arts in interdisciplinary studio art.

In Room with a View, room settings mirror the viewpoint of Lane’s orientation as an inhabitant of places similar but different; they evoke aspects of the real while remaining worlds apart. These environments reflect a fantasy of desire created from a longing for home.

Miniature dioramas collect and contain jeweled moments that aid in the infinitude of the daydream. As tangible places they become an intense substitute for the real, the dream and the memory. Her work also features digital photographs, which document ephemeral mixed-media sculpture.

A gallery talk/reception with the artist will be held 4:30-5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the gallery. The exhibit runs through Sept. 17.

The Joan Derryberry Art Gallery is located on the first floor of TTU’s Roaden University Center and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This exhibit is a Center Stage sponsored event funded by TTU’s General Education Fund. There is no charge for the event; refreshments will be served. For more information, contact Janis Nunnally, gallery coordinator, at jsnunnally21@tntech.edu.
