COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 12, 2004) — Shannon McCawley of Cookeville
and Andrea Looney of Kingsport recently received the Swindell/Jackson
Undergraduate Research Endowment Scholarship awarded by Tennessee Tech
University’s Chemistry Department.
The endowment, created to foster undergraduate research, was established
by Robert Swindell, a former faculty member for more than 25 years who
served as Chemistry Department chairperson for five years, and chemistry
professor Barbara Jackson.
“The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for students
who are interested in aiding professors with research,” said Jackson.
“It also gives recipients experience that helps prepare them for
the top graduate programs.
“Most of our recipients give presentations at national and international
conventions, and their research quite often appears in scientific journals,”
Jackson added.
McCawley, an American Chemical Society major, assists chemistry professor
Dale Ensor with a project called “Chromatographic separation of
lanthanide and actinide elements.” Looney, a biochemistry major,
works with chemistry associate professor Jeff Boles on a project titled
“New Insights into the use of beta-chloro-alanine in tryptophan
synthase kinetic assay.”
