COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 28, 2004) — Tennessee Tech University’s Cumberland Quintet will be in concert at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building.

“The show will feature a wide variety of musical styles for the wind quintet,” said director William Woodworth.

Among the works that will be performed include “Presto” by Haydn, “Serenade” by Farkas, “The Chimney of King Rene” by Milhaud and “Shadows” by Dollarhide.

“Shadows explores both the written and improvised sounds for the quintet,” Woodworth said. “Coloristic possibilities are expanded by the addition of gongs, finger cymbals and harmonicas. This work focuses on the color and texture, rather than rhythm and melody.”

The Cumberland Quintet has performed as guest artists at music conventions for the College Music Society, Tennessee Music Educators Association, National Flute Association and Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.

Members are Greg Danner, horn; James Lotz, bassoon; Roger Martin, flute; Anne Thurmond, clarinet; and Woodworth, oboe.

The group’s latest recording, entitled “Shadows and Dreams,” is available from Centaur Records.
