Larger field, new events, more prize money for 24th Golden Eagle Scramble

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (May 29, 2003) — With a host of changes aimed at improving what was already one of the most popular golf tournaments in the state, registration is under way for the 24th annual Coca-Cola Golden Eagle Scramble presented by Miller Lite. The tournament is set for June 6-8 at three Cookeville area golf courses.

Tournament applications are being mailed to past participants and former Tennessee Tech athletes, and are also available at the Eblen Center ticket office. With early registration, golfers will have the opportunity to choose — until a limit is reached at each course — where they will play Friday's and Saturday's rounds. All teams will be placed in flights Saturday night to determine which course they will play for their final round Sunday.

" Early registration really benefits the golfers now since they get to choose their courses and they get to play their practice rounds as soon as they register," says Frank Harrell, tournament director.

One of the region's premier amateur tournaments for more than two decades, this year's scramble will include more teams, more prizes and prize money, and a more competitive format.

By dividing the field onto all three courses all three days, the new tournament format can include as many as 300 teams — an increase of 100 golfers — but each venue will host a smaller field each day. Because of that, play at each course should be quicker, allowing the tournament to run smoothly.

Among the most noticeable changes to the format will be a more competitive championship flight, playing head-to-head all three days. There will also be improved payoffs in the middle and lower flights to make the tournament more attractive to every level of participant. In all, there will be more than $21,000 in payoffs.

In addition to the three days of golf and three practice rounds, participants will also receive tickets to the Friday night concert and the Saturday night barbecue, a chance at hole-in-one prizes including cash and new cars, and a chance at a million dollar shot.

The $175 per person entry fee also includes golf carts and mulligans each day during the tournament and a goodie bag.
