of the Center for Equal Opportunity, weekly syndicated newspaper columnist
and political analyst for FOX News highlights Tennessee Tech University
events observing March as Womens History Month.
Titled "Working Women Meeting the Challenges of the 21st
Century," Chavezs presentation is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
March 4, in the Derryberry Auditorium.
She was honored by the Library of Congress in 2000 as a "Living
Legend" for her contributions to Americas cultural and historical
legacy, and in 2001, she was President George W. Bushs nominee
for Secretary of Labor but chose to withdraw from the running.
Sponsored by the TTU Womens Center, the Chavez presentation is
a Center Stage event that is free and open to the public.
Other Womens History Month events on campus include:
A TTU Womens History display from March 3 to 7 in the showcase
outside the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery in the Roaden University Center,
and a coinciding panel discussion set for 11 a.m. on Thursday, March
6, in the buildings Executive Dining Room.
"The program will celebrate the founding of the TTU Commission
on the Status of Women and the founding of the campus Womens Center," said
Gretta Stanger, interim chairperson of sociology and philosophy and center
director.
Among the other panelists will be former TTU President Angelo Volpe
and Sue Ellen Odom-Burduck, who chaired the Commission on the Status
of Women when its data led to a recommendation for the creation of the
Womens Center.
Pictures from the early days of the campus organizations will be on
display throughout the hour-long discussion.
A Sexual Assault Awareness Display will be exhibited in the RUC
showcase from March 24 to 28.
