April 6 concert at TTU celebrates International Trombone Week

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 28, 2003) – Tennessee Tech University’s trombone choir, Trombones at Tech, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building.

Free and open to the public, the event is being held in recognition of the first-ever "International Trombone Week."

" It’s a global effort by the International Trombone Association to expose millions of people to the sound of the trombone," said Joshua Hauser, TTU music assistant professor and director of Trombones at Tech.

" During this week, the global trombone community — reaching across political borders and language barriers — is presenting hundreds of trombone-oriented concerts and recitals," he continued.

And Hauser says he’s glad TTU is involved with the effort.

" The ensemble will showcase and reintroduce the sound of the trombone, now making a comeback in commercials, hit music, orchestra programs and in the late night network television show bands," he said. "What you hear from today’s trombone players will surprise you."

Among the works to be performed are compositions by Hans Leo Hassler, David Fetter, Tommy Penderson, Daniel Speer, and new transcriptions for trombone ensemble by Hauser and TTU senior Michael Shepherd.

Also featured at the concert will be the Third Annual Alumni Trombone Ensemble, made up of former TTU trombone students.
" It’s always a pleasure to work with our returning alumni," Hauser said.

" Besides," he added, "how often do you get to hear 20-plus trombones at the same time? The sound is glorious!"
