With efforts underway to enhance diversity at TTU, several recruitment initiatives designed to welcome African-American students to campus and familiarize them with what it might be like to attend Tennessee Tech University have been developed.
TTU's African-American Student Weekend, held April 20 - 21, 2001, drew more than 30 participants from schools in Chattanooga, Nashville, Knoxville and the Jackson area.
The two-day event, coordinated by Admissions counselor Eric Farmer, featured a welcome luncheon where prospective students mingled with faculty, staff and current TTU students; an on-campus college fair; activities in the Fitness Center; socializing; a panel discussion in the Black Cultural Center; and a dance in the OVC room.
The students even spent the night in the residence halls, said Farmer, to give them the chance to experience campus life firsthand.
In addition to the weekend event, TTUs Admissions staff has also coordinated several day trips for prospective African-American students. After arriving on campus in the morning, students spend a few hours touring facilities, speaking with current TTU students and faculty and participating in a Web scavenger hunt before heading home.
This summer TTU will host a week- long College and Career Enrichment Camp for African-American high school students designed to give them the chance to explore different majors in a fun and interesting way.
