Guaranteed scholarships offered to top students

To attract more of Tennessee’s top students, TTU is offering guaranteed scholarships, known as University Service Scholarships, to those with ACT scores of 28 or higher and grade point averages of at least 3.5.

“Lower grade point averages can be considered if a student took advanced placement or honors courses,” adds Jim Gray, assistant director of Admissions. “We have a formula for weighting the grade point averages for those taking these more rigorous classes.”

To be eligible, the student must be a graduate of any Tennessee high school and be entering TTU as a new freshman in the fall of 2002. The actual amount students may be eligible to receive depends on both their ACT score and grade point average as illustrated by the following chart:

ACT Score High School G.P.A Award Amount Per Year
31+ 3.75 or higher $4,000.00 annually
31+ 3.5 to 3.74 $3,000.00 annually
28 - 30 3.75 or higher $2,000.00 annually
28 - 30 3.5 to 3.74 $1,000.00 annually

Students who receive a University Service Scholarship for their freshman year may renew the award annually for up to four years provided they continue to meet eligibility requirements.

To maintain eligibility, recipients of the scholarship must have a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 in their university coursework and contribute 75 hours of service – or about five hours a week – to the
university each semester.

Transfer students who’ve completed two years of study at a Tennessee community college and who received a Tennessee Board of Regents’ Academic Guaranteed Scholarship are also eligible to apply for TTU’s University Service Scholarship. Transfer students participating in certain honors organizations may also be eligible. Transfer students awarded the scholarship will receive $2,500 each year for their two remaining years of study at TTU. Of course, this is provided they continue to meet the scholarship’s eligibility requirements.

Because TTU’s scholarship application deadline is now Dec. 15, every effort was made to make students aware of the scholarship in time to apply.

High school counselors and principals in Tennessee were sent notification letters from TTU’s Admissions office. And press releases about the scholarship were distributed to every newspaper in the state.
