With efforts currently underway to redesign TTUs line of recruitment publications, focus groups were recently conducted with area high school students to gain insight into what sort of information they seek in college recruitment materials.
Fifteen college-bound Cookeville High School students recently took part in two focus group sessions offering their opinions on everything from how they felt about receiving unsolicited materials from colleges to what they did or didnt find appealing about several sample publications.
What really interested these particular teens was information on costs, what majors are offered, the size of the school, class sizes and facts about the student body such as the male/female ratio, said Alisa Frazier, marketing director and moderator for the focus groups. They seemed to prefer information presented in bite-size chunks such as bulleted lists, maps and charts.
They also expressed an appreciation for hard facts, especially when they were backed up by outside sources such as magazines, books or college ranking groups, continued Frazier., though they were somewhat skeptical of unqualified claims.
Input from focus groups like this one will play a role in some of the design and content decisions for TTUs new line of recruitment publications.
