Private Instruction Policy
Private Instruction
Music Majors must enroll in Private Instruction each semester of
full-time residency (except for the student teaching semester). Music
Education (Licensure) majors must complete three (3) semesters of
Private Instruction at Upper Division (3000 Level) before student
teaching. Four (4) semesters of Upper Division (3000 Level) Private
Instruction are required for Music Performance majors.
If a student wishes to change his/her area of performance emphasis
(major instrument) within the Department, he/she may do so only with
the approval of the student’s advisor and the private instruction
professors. Upper Division requirements and proficiency standards
must be met in the new area of performance emphasis.

Convocation and Repertoire Class
All students enrolled in Private Instruction will participate in
Convocation and Repertory Class as scheduled. The Department schedules
Repertoire Classes and Convocations at 11:00 a.m. on selected Tuesday
and Thursday mornings respectively and distributes a printed schedule
at the beginning of each term. Convocation and Repertoire Class attendance
is required and grades in Private Instruction reflect not only the
student’s progress in the applied area, but also attendance
at Repertoire Class and Convocation. In order to validate Convocation
attendance, Attendance Slips are turned in at the door upon exiting
Wattenbarger Auditorium.
Students performing in Convocation must submit a completed Convocation
Form to the Convocation Coordinator
as soon as the private instructor notifies the student they are to
perform
on Convocation. Placement on a Convocation program is on a first-come
first-served basis.

Applied Juries
All music majors appear before a faculty jury at the end of each
semester for a final examination in the applied area of private instruction.
Music Education (Licensure) majors appear before faculty members
from the area of concentration. Music Performance majors appear before
the Performance Committee. Each student, regardless of major, signs
for a jury time on the posted schedule. Before the jury performance,
the student completes the appropriate Jury Form
and makes copies of the completed Form for each examining faculty
member.

Upper Level Jury (Music Licensure and Composition
majors)
All music licensure and composition majors must pass
an Upper Level Jury at the end of the fourth semester and before
enrolling in Upper Division (3000 Level) private instruction. Before
the jury performance, the student completes the appropriate Jury
Form and makes copies of the completed Form for each examining
faculty member.

Upper Level Performance Exam (Performance Option Majors)
All Performance Option majors must pass the Upper Level Performance
Exam at the end of the fourth semester of study and before enrolling
in Upper Division (3000 Level) private instruction. The student must
successfully complete all portions of the exam to pass. A student
cannot retake a failed Upper Level Performance Exam until the end
of following semester and must use new music. Failing the Upper Level
Performance Exam three (3) times constitutes exclusion from the Music
Performance degree. Before the jury performance, the student completes
the appropriate Jury Form and makes copies
of the completed Form for each examining faculty member.
Composition students will exam via CD or videotape.

Concert Attendance
All music majors must attend twelve (12) recitals or concerts each
semester of full-time residency (except for the student teaching
semester). Students receive an attendance card each semester. After
each attended concert, the card is stamped by the concert attendant,
and the attendee records the date.
For performances in which the student is a participant (other than
Convocation performances), the faculty member in charge will initial
the appropriate space for the event.
At the end of each semester, the student returns the attendance
card to the private instructor at Applied Juries. Deficient cards,
or cards received after the private instructor has submitted the
Final Recorded Grade, will result in the student receiving an “I” grade
in Private Instruction. To rectify a grade of “I”, the
total number of recitals recorded at the end of the next semester
must equal 24 for both semesters combined. The student must rectify
an “I” within an academic year or it will automatically
revert to a grade of “F”. An “I” received
in the semester of graduation will be treated as an “F” by
the Office of Student Records.
