TTU Application

All students applying for admission to the TTU Department of Music and Art must first apply to TTU for admission.

Students should complete the application process as soon as possible in the fall of the year before their proposed entrance to the University. Early application is encouraged because of financial aid deadlines (December 15).

Music Major Application

Students intending to major in music must complete a separate Music Major Departmental Question Form and a Music Major Departmental Reference Form, and return the forms to the Department of Music and Art as soon as possible.

Scholarships

Music and art majors are encouraged to use ScholarWeb, TTU’s Interactive Scholarship Database System, to search for scholarships for which they are eligible.

The Department of Music and Art administers a generous scholarship program for student musicians, regardless of academic major. Music majors, and all other interested musicians, must apply and be accepted to TTU, complete all required forms, and successfully audition to be considered for a music scholarship. You should audition for a music scholarship as soon as possible in the year before your entrance to the University.

Non-music majors desiring to audition for ensemble service awards should contact the University Ensemble Office (931.372.3165) for information. Non-music majors should select audition material from the List of Suggested Audition Material that best displays your musicianship and technical ability.

Auditions

Acceptance as a music major requires that you complete a TTU application, a Music Major Departmental Question Form, a Music Major Departmental Reference Form, and successfully audition on your major instrument or voice. Audition dates for the Department of Music and Art are as follows:

Friday, November 21, 2008 (Winds, Strings, and Percussion)
Friday, February 6, 2009 (Voice and Piano)
Friday, February 13, 2009 (Winds, Strings, and Percussion)
Friday, February 27, 2009 (All instruments and Voice)
Friday March 20, 2009 (Voice Only)
Other times by appointment. Call (931) 372-3161.

Prospective music majors must audition on your major instrument or voice. The audition, performed for representative members of the faculty, informs the faculty of your level of musical proficiency and technical achievement, and determines your eligibility for a music scholarship.

To guide prospective music majors as they prepare for auditions, music faculty members have prepared a list of suggested audition material. These are suggested as minimum entrance requirements; however, it is important for you to perform repertoire that best demonstrates your musical and technical capabilities characteristic of your performing medium. If you have questions about the appropriate audition material, please contact the music faculty member specific to your major instrument or voice.

Ensemble Auditions

Auditions for acceptance as a music major do not constitute acceptance or placement in the Department’s music ensembles (concert bands, choirs, jazz ensembles, orchestras, and other performing organizations). Many ensembles require students to audition separately for admission and/or sign up before the beginning of a semester or academic year. Ensemble auditions take place during the first week of classes each semester or academic year. Check with the individual ensemble director for membership information and requirements.

Ensemble members are not required to be music majors. All Tennessee Tech students are encouraged to join a music ensemble. However, all music majors are required to participate in the appropriate Ensemble of Record each semester of residency.
