ANTICIPATED VACANCY

 

The Oakley Sustainable Agricultural Center (OSAC) consists of two tracts of land totaling 1800 acres with a 600 cow commercial beef herd.  The OSAC employs 3 temporary full-time workers and 6-10 student workers.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture with a major/concentration in Animal Science or Plant Science or related field.  Knowledge of beef cattle and other livestock management.  Knowledge of commercial and purebred beef cattle production including artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and showing aspects.  Knowledge of animal nutrition, feed requirements, and crops for beef cattle management.  Ability to operate farm machinery safely and efficiently.  The ability to perform manual labor in adverse weather conditions.  The ability to supervise student workers.  Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with faculty, staff, students, area farmers, and agriculture related businesses.  Ability to comprehend and comply with TTU and TBR (Tennessee Board of Regents) policies and procedures.  Live in University residence located at the OSAC.  Must have valid Tennessee driver’s license or be license eligible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Assistant Farm Manager assists in managing the daily operation of the 600 cow beef herd.  He/she engages in and supervises workers engaged in feeding and providing care of the beef cattle; maintains, repairs and operates various equipment; plants and harvests feed crops and maintains a supply of feed and other supplies; maintains and reviews records of operation for management purposes and for class use; conducts and instructs students in farm labs; works with and assists outside businesses and agencies which are conducting training sessions and research projects in conjunction with the University at the OSAC; works with other farm employees at the University’s Shipley and Waters Farms when needed; represents the TTU College of Agricultural and Human Sciences at events such as trade shows and recruiting events.                                                                                      

The School includes 10 faculty and 250 students.  Academic areas of study include:  Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Education, Agricultural Engineering Technology, Agronomy, Animal Science, Environmental Agriscience, Horticulture, Nursery and Landscape Management, and Pre-Veterinary Science.  See the University home page at www.tntech.edu.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Benefits include the accumulation of two vacation days per month and one sick leave day per month, and thirteen (13) University holidays.
