About the Department
The Angelo and Jennette Volpe Library at Tennessee Technological University is a selective Federal Depository for publications of the United States Government distributed by the Government Printing Office (GPO). This depository was established in 1969. The Library serves the Sixth U.S. House of Representatives Congressional District of Tennessee, represented by Congressman Bart Gordon, and has primary sources of government information.

Collection Descriptions
The Library receives approximately 40% of all publications made available through the Federal Depository Library Program. Current holdings vary in format: books, papers, microfiche, CD-ROMs, diskettes, and online services. Although the Library receives less than half of all publications, it does have access to documents available outside the Library through online access, the Internet, or Interlibrary Loan.
The Library selects extensively in the following areas due to University programs and regional location:
- Department of Agriculture
- Department of Education
- Bureau of the Census
- Environmental Protection Agency
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
- Water Resources Council
- U.S. Geological Survey
- Congressional publications
- Appalachian Regional Commission
- Tennessee Valley Authority
Some of the more popular collections include maps, journals, census information, and ERIC documents. All government publications are located on Level 2 of the University Library, with the exception of materials in electronic format which are in the Media Center on Level 1 and the Water Center.
A complete listing of materials available in the Library may be accessed using the MARCIVE CD-ROM located in the reference area. A user guide is available at the Reference and Information Desk. You may also contact the Department office at 931-372-6105 for information.
Hours
The Department office is open during regular semesters from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. For assistance during off-hours, please contact the Reference and Information Desk Librarian on Level 2, or call 931-372-3326. The Library hours vary when classes are not in session and around holidays.
Services
The Government Publications, Maps and Microforms Department provides a variety of services to assist users with the collection. Services include reference assistance, loaning materials, and library instruction. Many government publications may be borrowed for a period of 2 weeks. If you are interested in an informational session for an individual or group on finding and using government sources, contact Regina Lee at 931-372-6105 or rlee@tntech.edu to schedule at time and date.
Most government publications may be checked out for a two-week period. This includes topographic maps.
