Faculty Attendance at University Functions
1. All faculty members are expected to attend General Faculty Meetings. A general faculty meeting is held at the beginning of the Fall semester; other faculty meetings are held throughout the academic year as scheduled on the Administrative Calendar.
2. Commencement Ceremonies are held at the close of each semester. Each department should arrange for at least half of its faculty members to be present at the commencement exercises. It is the faculty member's responsibility to provide his own academic regalia for commencement programs.

Appointment and Qualifications of Graduate Faculty

Appointment as a full member of the graduate faculty is a recognition of the faculty member's scholarship and erudition and ability to teach graduate-level courses and guide graduate study.

Appointment and Qualifications of Graduate Faculty:  Any full time member of the faculty is eligible for membership on the graduate faculty, regardless of the member's academic discipline, provided the following criteria are satisfied.

A full member of the Graduate Faculty shall have: earned a doctorate (or equivalent terminal degree) in an appropriate discipline; achieved professorial rank in the discipline relevant to the degree; had at least three years of college or university teaching exclusive of experience gained as a graduate assistant, fellow, or trainee; achieved an appropriate level of scholarship and erudition characterized by honesty, accuracy, critical ability and thoroughness; and demonstrated (by involvement in institutional activities) his or her commitment to the academic community and the University, as well as to his or her students and academic discipline. Primary responsibility for determining that a faculty member meets the above requirements rests with the Departmental Chairperson and those faculty in the department who are members of the Graduate Faculty, with oversight being provided by the Dean of the College, the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Each member of the Graduate Faculty is required to have on file in his or her academic unit current information as to qualifications for continuing service as a member of the Graduate Faculty, such as the faculty member's post-secondary level education, relevant employment experience, professional certifications or licenses, publications and presentations, and master's and doctoral-level students advised.

If a department has a special need for graduate teaching, advisement, or research which can only be met by a faculty member who is not eligible for full membership (including adjunct faculty), the Departmental Chairperson may nominate that faculty member for appointment as an associate member on the basis of at least a master's degree and demonstrated specific competence to carry out the needed services.

Appointment to full or associate membership on the Graduate Faculty is made by the President of the University based upon recommendations submitted by Departmental Chairpersons with suitable endorsement from the Dean of the College, the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The appropriate appointment forms may be obtained from the office of the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

Responsibilities of the Graduate Faculty:  A faculty member appointed to full membership on the Graduate Faculty serves also as a member of the faculty of an academic department and college. As a full member of the Graduate Faculty, the appointee may be asked to serve as a teacher of a graduate course, as a teacher of a readings or special problems course, as a member of an advisory committee, as advisor for master's level research and thesis and/or chairperson of the student's advisory committee (normally the advisor is also chairperson of the student's advisory committee), as a director of some phase of development of the research facilities of the University, or as a member of the Graduate School Executive Committee. A full member is also eligible to serve as advisor for doctoral-level research and dissertation and/or to chair the student's advisory committee, provided the Graduate Faculty member has demonstrated significant research capability and is experienced in directing independent study, including the directing of master's-level research and the successful chairing of master's-level advisory committees. At the discretion of the Departmental Chairperson, responsibilities of an associate member may be any of those normally given to a full member of the Graduate Faculty, except serving on the Graduate School Executive Committee, or serving as PhD-level research advisor or chairing a PhD student's advisory committee. Serving as a master's level research advisor and/or chairing a master's student advisory committee must be reviewed and approved by the Dean of the College and the Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies.

A teacher of any course for which students receive graduate credit must be a full or associate member of the Graduate Faculty. The teacher has the normal responsibilities appropriate to the course. When students are enrolled in undergraduate classes (400/500) for graduate credit, the faculty member has the responsibility of making appropriate additional assignments to ensure students receive proper value from the courses. A general description of the extra work required of students taking a 400/500 level course for graduate credit must be included in the description of the course approved by the Graduate School Executive Committee. Teachers of undergraduate courses are provided class rolls that show the names of those students seeking graduate credit for work in their classes. Each teacher is also responsible for seeing that the students in graduate classes have sufficient prerequisites to permit the subject matter to be presented and discussed without hindrance.

[Approved by the Graduate School Executive Committee November 29, 1990; approved by the Academic Council January 30, 1991.]
