Born in Rochester, NY in 1951. Married to the former Kathryne Ann DeLoach of Jackson, Tennessee in 1975. Two children.

BSME with High Distinction from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1973 MSME from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1974 (selected as a President's Fellow at Georgia Tech)
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1978 (selected as a Harold S. Vanderbilt Graduate Scholar at Vanderbilt) Registered as a Professional Engineer in Tennessee and Virginia.

Industrial experience includes a wide range of consulting activities, as well as a full time position as a Mechanical Engineer in the Machine Design Group at Tennessee Eastman Company (at the time a division of Eastman Kodak) in Kingsport, Tennessee. Held faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University (1978-79 and 1981-89), the University of Virginia (1979-81), and the University of Michigan (1989 - 1993), and also served at the University of Dayton as Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (1993-1999). Director of the Design Laboratory at Michigan, 7/91 - 7/93. Editor for Computer Aided Design and Optimization for the IFToMM journal, Mechanism and Machine Theory 93-96. Interim Director of the Engineering Computing Center, University of Dayton, 12/93 - 7/94.

Currently Dean of the College of Engineering at Tennessee Technological University.

Research interests in design and manufacturing, nonlinear programming theory and applications, power transmission systems, chaos, and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). Has worked on a number of optimal design applications, spanning the diverse space from compact gear trains to maximally stable wing configurations for tethered satellites to genetic algorithms for optimal tolerancing.

Author or co-author of numerous articles that have appeared in journals and books, most related to mechanical design or optimization. Content Expert on Engineering for the 1997 edition of the Microsoft Encarta Multi-Media Encyclopedia. Strong and continuing interest in engineering education. ASME/ABET Mechanical Engineering Program Evaluator, 1995 -.
SAE Ralph Teetor Engineering Educator Award winner in 1984. 1992 Teaching Excellence Award ("for his teaching innovations and dedication that elevated the Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics Department design courses to world-class status") from MEAM Department at Michigan (given in May 1993). Extensive involvement in development of both undergraduate and graduate level design curricula. Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Active as a Member since 1972. Some former activities include Chair of the Nashville Section (1986-87), Chair of the ASME Design Engineering Division (1993-94), Chair of ASME Design Automation Committee (1986-88), Chair of ASME Design Automation Conference (1981-83, 1985-86), Design Automation Associate Editor for Trans. ASME J. Mechanical Design (1981-82) and Trans. ASME J. Mechanisms, Transmissions and Automation in Design (1982-83), member of the ASME Design Division Executive Committee (1989-94), member of the Executive Committee for the Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Subdivision (1999-2002), member of the Board on Communications, Member of the Publications Committee (1994-2003), Design Engineering Division representative to the National Student Design Contest, alternate representative from the Systems & Design Group and from the Board on Communications to the National Nominating Committee. Also a current member of Phi Kappa Phi, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and NARAS (associate member). Community volunteer for Project HELP - Helping the Elderly Live Productively. Mechanical Engineering Representative on the Tennessee Board of Boiler Rules (2002-05). Listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 2002 and 2004.
