PROCEDURES

OF THE

TTU ENGINEERS OF DISTINCTION AWARDS COMMITTEE 

Section I 

PURPOSE

The objective of the Engineers of Distinction Award is to provide suitable recognition for College of Engineering alumni, and others whose distinguished careers have contributed to or reflect credit on the various academic programs in the College and/or the Profession.

Section II 

ELIGIBILITY

•  To become eligible for selection to receive the Engineers of Distinction Award, a nominee must satisfy all of the following criteria: (a) have established an outstanding professional record; (b) have demonstrated distinguished service to the Profession including, desirably, interest and dedication to the College of Engineering at TTU; (c) have established a personal reputation at either the local, state, or national levels for outstanding character and citizenship for a period of time sufficient in length to reflect without reservation great credit and honor upon the University and/or the Profession. Selection shall be by the Awards Committee.

•  No University employee, while in active service to the University, may be eligible for the award.

Section III 

AWARDS COMMITTEE

•  The Awards Committee shall be constituted as follows:

•  President of TTU or his/her designated representative

•  Provost or his/her designated representative

•  Dean of the College of Engineering

•  President of the TTU Engineering Development Foundation

•  President of TTU Student Chapter of Tau Beta Pi

•  Chair of the Dean's Advisory Board or a member of the Board chosen by the Dean of the College of Engineering

•  Two members of the faculty of the College

•  The two members of the College of Engineering faculty shall be appointed by the Dean of Engineering. Initial appointments shall be for a period of two and four years respectively; thereafter, appointments shall be for a four - year term. A person shall not be eligible for reappointment to the Awards Committee until a period of two years has elapsed.

•  The Dean of the College of Engineering shall serve as Chair of the Awards Committee. He/she shall be responsible for and serve as custodian of any public display commemorating achievements of the recipients. The Dean shall also be responsible for convening the meetings of the Awards Committee.

Section IV 

NOMINATIONS

•  Nominations for the Engineers of Distinction Award may be presented in writing to the Awards Committee through the Committee Chair or the Secretary by an interested person at any time.

•  The Secretary shall document the qualifications of each nominee by obtaining such information as the Awards Committee may require to ensure that the standards for the award are met.

•  Persons may be nominated for the award posthumously under special circumstances. Such award(s) may be in addition to other recipients.

Section V 

SELECTION 

•  The Committee shall consider all nominees for the Engineers of Distinction Award at the annual meeting. The annual meeting date shall be set by the Secretary of the Awards Committee and shall be given wide publicity.

•  The Awards Committee will review all nominations at the annual meeting and eliminate those nominations not meeting the standards.

•  The annual meetings shall be closed because of the privacy of matters that may be discussed.

•  The number of recipients selected for the first year shall not exceed five; thereafter, the number of recipients shall be limited to a maximum of two annually, except as noted in Section IV, 3.

•  Nominees who are not selected at the annual meeting at which they are first eligible will automatically be carried forward for consideration at the next two annual meetings unless dropped from the list of nominees by a motion of the Awards Committee. If not selected in this period, they may be renominated at a later date.

•  The Awards Committee may on its own motion make a nomination for consideration by the Committee. These nominees will be subject to the provisions of Section V, 2.


•  A quorum of the Awards Committee shall consist of not less than six of the members. To be selected to receive the Engineers of Distinction Award, a nominee shall receive a favorable vote from not less than 80% of the members present at the annual meeting. 

Section VI 

AWARDS 

•  Suggestions as to the type of award shall be prepared by the Secretary to the Awards committee and presented to the Awards Committee for approval.

•  Awards will be presented at the annual Engineers Week Banquet or other appropriate forum. Living recipients and representative(s) of posthumous awardee(s) are expected to be present to accept the award. Should unavoidable circumstances prevent living recipients from attending the award ceremony, the presentation may be delayed until a future year.

•  An appropriate public display commemorating the achievements of the recipients shall be prepared by the Secretary and located at a site approved by the Awards Committee.

Section VII 

IMPLEMENTATION 

The College of Engineering shall defray expenses related to providing appropriate awards and to arranging for the public display commemorating the achievements of the recipients.
