| Assistantships & Financial Aid
Fall 2007 semester graduate tuition and fees at TTU were approximately $3000 for in-state and approximately $7000 for out-of-state students. If a student receives a half or full assistantship, the entire out-of-state $4000 fee is waived. In addition, a half assistantship receives a 50 percent waiver of the in-state fees
(leaving $1500 due from the student) and a full assistantship receives a 100 percent waiver of in-state fees (leaving no fees due from the student).
The Department offers graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs) each semester. About half of these GTA positions are full ($1000/month stipend plus full tuition waiver for 20 hours/week of work) and the others are half ($500/month stipend plus half tuition waiver for 10 hours/week of work). The TTU Office of Graduate Studies also offers a limited number of Graduate Minority Student Fellowships each year, with full stipend and full tuition waiver. The CESR and CMR Research Centers offer graduate research assistantships (GRAs) to both MS and PhD students. One hundred percent of our Ph.D. students have received support and about 80 percent of our MS students have received support.
The requirements for receiving an assistantship are higher than the regular admissions criteria. Students who are in probationary status are not eligible for assistantships. An ECE graduate student receiving an assistantship is required to register for a minimum of 9 hours during Fall or Spring semesters and a minimum of 3 hours during Summer semester. To meet this requirement, students may take thesis hours beyond their regular course hours. MSEE students may only receive an assistantship during the first two calendar years after their initial enrollment. Non-thesis students and students supported by external companies or fellowships are ineligible for assistantships. There is no guarantee that a student will receive an assistantship during his/her first two years. Whether or not a student receives an assistantship depends on the availability of funds and the suitability of the student to carry out the responsibilities. Students interested in receiving research and/or teaching assistantship awards must first complete the admission process and then submit the following ECE assistantship application by March 15 th for August (Fall) entrance or by October 15 th for January (Spring) entrance. The ECE Graduate Program Committee reviews assistantship applications and recommends which applicants should receive teaching and/or research assistantships, based on the number of GTAs requested by the Department Chair and the number of GRAs requested by the Research Centers. This review is done twice a year, in March and in October, in close collaboration with the ECE faculty and the Research Center directors. Successful applicants are sent an assistantship offer letter, and must accept or decline this offer in writing by May 1st for August entrance or December 1st for January entrance.
