Student Activities

Geosciences majors at TTU participate in a wide variety of activities. Most classes go on at least one field trip, and some have several opportunities to do so. Research in the Geosciences usually involves being outdoors, so students often find themselves spending themselves spending a lot of their time outside.
Geoclub
The department sponsors the Geoclub, a student organization devoted to the
Geosciences. It is open to anyone with interest in the Earth Sciences, not
only GEO majors. The Geoclub meets in Kittrell Hall (usually room 208).
Meeting announcements are generally posted around the building 1-2 weeks
prior to the meeting. The club raises money for field trips and other activities
through fundraisers, including an annual rock sale. For more information,

Geoconclave
Geoconclave is a Geology competition between TTU,
MTSU, UTK,
APSU, and UTM.
The students participate in a variety of technical and non-technical events,
including: the Rock Hammer Throw, the Geode Roll, Mineralogy tests, Rock
ID, and many, many others. Points are awarded to the team from each school
depending on the outcome of each competition. The last competition is the
Rock Bowl--a geology based quiz bowl, which takes place at the last night
of Conclave. The overall winner is decided by which team has the most overall
points is declared the overall winner. The team who wins the Rock Bowl receives
a separate trophy, but the points from the Rock Bowl count towards the overall
total. TTU Geo majors have usually do very well in this competition, having
won the overall award the majority of the 20-odd years that the competition
has taken place.
