General Information

The Computer Center offers free consulting to those who wish to purchase computer hardware or software for use on or off campus. Academic Computing Support will help you choose equipment suited to your needs, budget, and working environment.

For on-campus purchases, you must complete a Request to Purchase Computer Hardware/Software Approval form, available in CH220, and return to the Computer Center. For more information, contact the Computer Center at 372-3387.

Academic Computing Support evaluates and tests software to provide campus users with informed opinions about which software packages are best for which environments. The purpose of maintaining this information is to save people the trouble of researching packages on their own and to keep them from making what could be costly mistakes. Since all software requests must be approved by the Computer Center, departments can save time and possibly money by calling for a recommendation before submitting a request form. The staff will be glad to help find the best software for your hardware, job requirements, and budget.

Some software companies offer educational pricing or academic site licenses. This allows departments to purchase some software packages at reduced prices. For example, Microsoft Office sells for about $300, but departments can buy a site license for it through the Computer Center for approximately $50. For more information on campus site licenses and contracts, return to the previous page, Purchasing Information.
