A macro virus is a new type of virus that uses a program's own
macro programming language to distribute itself. Unlike previous
("traditional") viruses, macro viruses do not infect programs;
they infect documents.
Microsoft has identified a particular macro virus, dubbed the
Prank Macro, or Concept Virus. This is a harmless but annoying
macro.
The Prank Macro is characterized by: a dialog box that appears
when you open an affected document, files that are changed to
templates without your knowledge, and certain macros that are
installed in Word.
If you have these symptoms, call the Computer Center at
x3387. We will come and scan your computer for viruses. If any
are found, we will remove them. If you're bug free, we can
install a preventative macro in MS-Word to so that a virus
cannot infect your system.
You can also scan for viruses yourself, and install the
preventative macro. F-PROT, the virus protection software
distributed free by the Computer Center for DOS or Windows 3.x,
will find the macro
viruses. You can download the latest version of F-PROT here to scan for viruses. You can
also download the Microsoft Virus
Tool to install within Word 6.0 or 95.
