| Richard
Kinsolving, TTU's 2007 Dintinguished Alumnus |
Richard Kinsolving, a pharmaceutical scientist
who has revolutionized the treatment of allergy symptoms,
was named Tennessee Tech University's 2007 Distinguished
Alumnus this past September.
Presented by TTU's Alumni Association, the
Distinguished Alumnus award is one of the highest bestowed
by the university and recognizes those who have demonstrated
professional excellence and achievement.
"The Tennessee Tech of the 1950s had
a wisdom we could not appreciate at the time," said
Kinsolving. "We did not even know how much we did
not know of the larger world — but Tech did —
and changed us forever. Tech gave us an accelerated course
in growing up along with technology."
Kinsolving, a scientist with Immune Recovery
Foundation, conceived and designed the first of a new
class of drugs — non-sedating antihistamines. Seldane,
the first of this class in 1974, reached more than $2
billion in annual sales. Its sequel in 2001, Allegra,
is still marketed. During this time frame, Kinsolving
was a director in several pharmaceutical companies, including
Fisons Corp., Pennwalt, Merrell, and Warner-Lambert.
A leading researcher since the 1960s, Kinsolving
holds 16 other patents in the pharmaceutical industry.
He was the founder and chief executive officer of several
biotech companies, including Bestechnologies, BioPharmacon,
Immuno-Rx, and the Immune Recovery Foundation, where he
currently serves as chairman and chief research scientist.
He is on the board of directors of Cel-Sci Corp., where
he heads both the audit and executive compensation committees.
During the past few years, Kinsolving has
dedicated himself to researching the immunology of cancer
and other chronic diseases. His efforts are focused on
developing useful clinical applications for academic research
findings and determining ways to integrate them into current
medical practice. He shares his time among facilities
in Atlanta, Mexico and Malta.
Kinsolving earned his bachelor's degree
in biology from TTU in 1957. He also holds a master's
in physiology from Vanderbilt University and a doctorate
in pharmacology from Emory University. In addition, he
conducted graduate studies at Stanford, Seaton Hall, Princeton,
Fairleigh Dickinson, and Marine Biological Labs.
On several occasions, Kinsolving has served
in higher education. In the 1960s, he taught at Nashville
General Hospital School of Nursing, and in the 1970s,
he was an associate professor of pharmacology at St. John's
University and also at Cincinnati Technical College.
Kinsolving is a member of several societies,
including the American Association for the Advancement
of Science, American Chemical Society and the American
Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics.

Tennessee
Tech University's MBA program has added concentrations
in human resource management and finance to its program
of study.
The two new concentrations join
existing concentrations in accounting, management information
systems, international business, and risk management
and insurance. In addition to traditional courses in
finance, management and other disciplines, the program
concentrations allow students to explore more advanced
business topics in greater detail.
"The completion of the MBA
degree with a concentration in a business specialty
provides students a means to advance with their current
companies or to serve as a springboard into another
career," said Bob Wood, assistant dean of TTU's
College of Business. "The concentrations in human
resource management and finance give our students additional
opportunities to meet the more specialized needs of
today's employers."
Tennessee Tech's MBA is offered
in both the traditional campus setting and in a 100
percent distance education setting. Tennessee Tech is
the only completely distance MBA program in the state
that is accredited by AACSB International, the longest
serving and largest global accrediting body for business
schools that offer undergraduate, master's, and doctoral
degrees in business and accounting.
For more information on the program
and available concentrations, call 931.372.3600 or visit

Dr.
James Akenson

| James Akenson |
My favorite professor would definitely be Dr.
James Akenson. At first I wasn't too sure about him, but as
the semester progressed, I realized two things. First of all,
he could take absolutely anything and make it apply to social
studies and present it in a very involved and interesting
unit. Secondly, only after I completed his class did I realized
that he had passed that insight on to me. He taught me to
think outside the box. He made me realize the importance of
finding topics of interest of my students and using those
interests, I could address state standards and objectives
with something other that a dry, redundant text book.
I still email with him on a regular basis. My
daughter is now a sophomore at TTU (finance/accounting major)
and has thoroughly enjoyed the few opportunities that she
had to visit with him. He is truly an amazing teacher, advisor,
mentor and friend.

My four years at Tennessee Tech were good ones.
Although I knew I was lucky to have such great professors
and mentors while I was there, I realize it more now that
I am at a very large graduate school.
My advisor was Dr. Dan Combs, the chair of the Biology Dept.
He was always extremely busy with lots of commitments and
research, but always made time to meet with me. He was the
most important part of my successful Tech career. He took
a personal interest in my needs and always went out of his
way to help me and tell me about new oppor-
tunities. He was even supportive in my decision to go into
another field in graduate school and helped me with my applications
and essays. Dr. Combs went above and beyond what I could ever
expect from a professor, mentor or advisor. I am truly lucky
to have gotten his help and guidance, and he most definitely
deserves to be honored as an outstanding faculty member and
mentor!
Drs. Michael Harrison and Evan Hart were also great mentors
to me. They were always helpful in allowing me to explore
the field of geology, even though I was a biology major at
TTU. Their influence and wonder-
ful courses led me to the graduate field of earth science.
Because of their support and advice, I now know that I want
to be a geology professor, and I hope to impact a few students
the way the impacted me. They were also helpful in taking
time to review essays I had for scholarships and wrote me
many letters of recommendation.
I hope that all three of these professors can be shown some
recognition for their helpfulness and support to undergraduates.
Thanks,
Cristina M. Carbajo

Librarian Christine Jones

| Christine Jones |
The one person that I remember who encouraged
and inspired me very much is Christine Jones, one of the librarians
at Tech when I was there, and with whom I worked for a couple
of years. I have often thought that if I were to be on a trivia
program such as "Who Wants to be a Millionaire,"
I would like to have her for one of my "Phone a Friend"
contacts. She is a walking "Book of Knowledge."
I remember her for knowing everything that was going on in
the library to the degree that if one needed a book or magazine
about a particular subject she could go and take it off the
shelf without ever having to look it up in the Card Catalogue
or the Reader's Guide. When I wrote my letter of application
for a job she rewrote it making me look and sound like the
best prospect for a teaching job of anyone in the United States.
I admire her very much.
