14. Demotion

14.1 Applicability of Policy 

This policy applies to all non-faculty personnel of the University. 

14.2 Definition 

A demotion occurs when an individual moves from his/her position to another position which is at a lower level within the University. In the Clerical and Support Classification and Compensation Plan, a change from a higher to a lower "skill level" position is a demotion. 

14.3 Eligibility 

An employee-initiated demotion prior to or following the completion of the six-month probationary period for the position presently occupied must have supervisory approval. Demotions initiated by the University may occur at any time, following appropriate evaluation of performance and job requirements. 

14.4 Probationary Period 

Upon acceptance of a demotion, an employee will begin a new six- month probationary period at the end of which his/her job performance will be evaluated. (See Human Resource Services Policies and Procedures, Sections 10.1.1 and 10.1.3

14.5 Salary, Accumulated Annual and Sick Leave 

Individuals who demote will receive an adjustment in salary. Individuals who move to a position in a lower "skill level", will be placed in the same relative position to the start-step as existed in their previous position. Accumulated annual leave (if applicable) and sick leave will not be affected by a demotion. 

14.6 Completion of the Personnel Action Form 

Items on the Personnel Action Form must be completed by the Chairperson, Director, Academic or Administrative Officer responsible for the new position per instructions accompanying the form.
