Closing Port 135 Security Vulnerability (DCOM)

On Campus Instructions        At Home/ResNet Instructions


For WINDOWS operating systems on the TTU campus only:

To protect your on campus computer from an expected set of new computer worms.

  1. Click on the Fix my computer link below.
     

  2. Windows 98:  Select Run this program from its current location.
    Windows 2000/XP
    :  Select Open from the popup window.
     

  3. Close all windows and RESTART your machine for the patch to take effect.
     

  4. Check out information on installing Microsoft's  Critical Updates

If you did NOT see this window after clicking the above link, try the links below which test and patch without a message window.  You will ONLY see a message if you need Critical Updates in addition to the Fix.

Vulnerable     Select Open/Run  
(If yes, do Critical Updates in addition to the Fix below.)

Fix     Select Open/Run

RESTART your computer.


If you receive this message, you need to install all Critical Updates in addition to the Fix above!!!

For Windows computers at your home or for ResNet users:

slightly different.)

  • Save it to a location on your desktop or elsewhere.
     

 

  • Click on the program to execute it.
  • Select the Am I Vulnerable? tab
  • Click on the Local DCOM Test to see if all of your Microsoft Critical Updates have been correctly installed.   
     

  • If you receive a message that your machine is vulnerable, be sure to install all Critical Updates  (If you are a ResNet user, you will be unable to do this step until unblocked.)
     
  • Next select the DCOMbobulate Me! tab.
  • Click on the button Disable DCOM  
  • BE SURE TO RESTART YOUR COMPUTER for the disabling process to be completed.
  • ResNet users contact ResNet to be unblocked.
